Nineties Worship Night Puts Spotlight on Retro Praise Music 2026-10-20T12:31:11-04:00 DeWayne Hamby

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

Nineties Worship Night rekindles a generation’s “heart songs,” blending nostalgia with renewed spiritual fervor, said founder Chad Gentry in a recent interview about the expanding ministry.

Launched in January 2021, the movement emerged from Gentry’s desire to honor his late mentor, worship leader and pastor Danny Chambers, who passed away in September 2020.

“I just said a very simple prayer;  ‘Here I am. Send me,’” Gentry said. “In December 2020, I had a divine download of what would become Nineties Worship Night.”

The initiative now spans four pillars—a docu-series, live events nationwide, a record label in partnership with Integrity Music and a media arm covering the contemporary Christian music landscape. The docu-series has released two episodes—one on Lindell Cooley and the Brownsville revival and another on Darlene Zschech and the early days of Hillsong worship—with plans for “episode three and four” in “first quarter of 2027,” Gentry said.

Beyond content, the in-person experiences have become a touchstone for those who grew up with the era’s anthems.

“We host live events all over the country, nights of worship that have a ’90s theme,” he said. Setlists revisit widely sung choruses, while screens intersperse “song stories” from the series. Some churches even lean into the motif with ’90s attire and graphics, but the evenings maintain a reverent focus.

“It’s definitely a very nostalgic night… but also a very serious and impactful night of worship,” Gentry said.

The response, he added, has been “overwhelming.” Messages arrive from “people literally all over the world,” many describing tears while watching the episodes. Gentry attributes that to the power of memory and ministry intertwined.

“There’s something so powerful about nostalgia,” he said. “It really reminds the viewer what their early walk with Christ was like,” he said. For some, the series becomes a gentle nudge “to revisit that time again and maybe do some things to grow a little closer to God.”

That pastoral impulse extends to the local church. While many congregations default to “the latest and greatest” in worship releases, Gentry hopes leaders will keep enduring choruses in rotation. He hears from younger worship leaders who grew up with parents playing the songs—or encountered them as they began serving.

“They do have somewhat of an attachment. It just takes that little bit of encouragement,” he said.

The catalog he references includes titles still embedded in Sunday memory: “As the Deer,” “Give Thanks (With a Grateful Heart)” and “Shout to the Lord.” Gentry believes revisiting those songs—what many would call their “heart song”—creates space for shared testimony. “It’s nice for them to be able to go somewhere and sing that with other people,” he said.

The docu-series also seeks to document the history behind those songs and movements with candor. Gentry said Zschech’s episode offered rare depth.

“She got into some subject matter she rarely has, if ever,” he noted. Viewers who “knew the story a little bit” still “learned something new about how everything got started at Hillsong.”

Through production schedules and tour planning, the team keeps its purpose front and center—to honor the pioneers of an era and the God they worshiped.

“That’s why we’re doing this,” Gentry said. “To honor and pay tribute and to celebrate those songs and show gratitude to the Lord for His hand in it all.”

As the ministry grows, Gentry’s hope is simple: that familiar refrains will once again rise from congregations, carrying listeners back to the moment faith first took root—and forward into renewed devotion.
