Netflix has released the official trailer for “Untold Mr. T: I Pity the Fool,” a new documentary that traces the unlikely rise of Laurence Tureaud—better known as Mr. T—from Chicago’s toughest neighborhoods to global pop culture fame. The film premieres on the streaming service on September 8, 2026.

Before I ever interviewed any celebrity, as a young teen I traveled with my friend to the opening of a Toys ‘R Us toystore where we stood in line for the chance to shake hands with the lager-than-life personality. In recent years, Mr. T has used his social media to share Bible verses and even a sermon he delivered at a church. When I sent a message to encourage him, he replied “Thank you Brother DeWayne.” And my inner child was thrilled.

Thank you Brother DeWayne.

The trailer opens with Mr. T’s signature catchphrase and a direct challenge to the image many still hold of him. “I’m not just some phony fake celebrity or fictitious hero. I’m real life,” he says. “I was not born Mr. T. People don’t know the road I had to travel. I was born in the Robert Taylor Project. You gotta be tough in the hood.”

He explains the deliberate creation of his public identity. Growing up as the youngest of 12 children in a three-bedroom home on Chicago’s South Side, Tureaud watched his father (and later a brother who had served in Vietnam) be addressed as “boy.” In response, he ordained himself Mr. T so that the first word out of people’s mouths would be “Mister”—a sign of respect his father never received.

The documentary, directed by Scott Weintrob, is part of Netflix’s Untold series of standalone sports and culture documentaries from Chapman Way and Maclain Way. It positions Mr. T’s story while focusing on the man behind the mohawk, gold chains, and catchphrase.

The official synopsis reads:

“Before the gold chains, mohawk, and Hollywood fame of The A-Team and Rocky III, there was Laurence Tureaud. This is the extraordinary origin story behind one of the most unlikely and beloved icons in entertainment — Mr. T.”

Key moments in his breakthrough appear in the trailer. A casting director’s call informing him he had landed the role of Clubber Lang in Rocky III is recalled with clear emotion: “Man, what an honor.” Sylvester Stallone had spotted Tureaud competing (and winning) as a nightclub bouncer on the NBC series Games People Play. The film introduced the world to “I pity the fool,” a line that became inseparable from the performer. He later cemented his status as B.A. Baracus on The A-Team from 1983 to 1987.

Mr. T’s faith is also profiled as he recites the Scripture Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded thee to be strong . . .”

The project is produced by Studio Large Eyes, Pantheon Media Group, and WWE Films. Executive producers include Weintrob, the Way brothers, Paul “Triple H” Levesque of WWE, and others. Early coverage notes the documentary includes archival footage, reflections from cultural figures such as Terry Crews, and insight into how Tureaud turned personal experience and self-branding into one of the most recognizable personas of the 1980s.

“Untold Mr. T: I Pity the Fool” arrives as the final installment in a short Untold slate that also includes films on Olympic breakdancer Raygun and former Texas and NFL quarterback Vince Young. For audiences who grew up with Clubber Lang and B.A. Baracus—or who simply recognize the mohawk and the gold—the film will focus on the road that led him to national prominence.
