Netflix’s reimagining of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “Little House on the Prairie” arrives July 9 as a sweeping, character-driven retelling that blends family drama with frontier survival and an origin story of the American West.

The series, adapted from Wilder’s semi-autobiographical books that have resonated with readers since the 1930s, centers on the Ingalls family and their quest to build community and character on the prairie. Alice Halsey stars as Laura Ingalls, with Luke Bracey portraying her father, Charles Ingalls; Crosby Fitzgerald as Caroline Ingalls; and Skywalker Hughes as Mary Ingalls. Rebecca Sonnenshine serves as showrunner.
“It’s quite obvious to me why these people are cared for by generations and all across the world,” said Bracey. “They’re good people, and they want to be good people. They’re not perfect people, but they want to be good members of their family, they want to be good members of their community.”
That simple focus on moral striving — imperfect people pursuing goodness — anchors the series and, according to the cast, is central to its broad appeal. Bracey said the authenticity of that aspiration is what allows viewers of many backgrounds to see themselves in the story.
“People see themselves a bit in the family and hope to see themselves in elements of the family,” he said. “The love that you see of the family is one that’s true.”
Crosby Fitzgerald emphasized the rarity of programming that genuinely invites all generations to watch and reflect together.
“It’s rarer and rarer of something that the whole family can, of all generations, can come around and watch and glean something from,” she said.
The new “Little House” isn’t a shot-for-shot remake of Michael Landon’s classic television series. Instead, it is a version that digs into the hardships and hopes of frontier life while preserving the moral center of Wilder’s work. The show’s tone ranges from tender moments of family connection to larger sequences of survival and consequence, offering what producers call a “kaleidoscopic” view of the early American West.
Eleven year-old Alice Halsey brings a youthful curiosity and resilience to Laura, also known as “Half Pint.” When asked what she would miss most on the prairie, she cleverly quipped a less than obvious choice.
“I don’t have a phone, but I think I would probably miss maybe air conditioning,” she said. “It is the best invention that anybody has ever created, I think.”
Skywalker Hughes, who plays Mary, spoke to the emotional cost of isolation on the frontier. “I would probably miss having phone, but not for the reason you think,” she said. “I really miss being able to talk to my friends and my family, especially because I’m half American, so my family lives in the US, and some of them live in Canada.”
The creative team has been intentional about honoring the moral and communal impulses of Wilder’s books while telling a story that resonates with contemporary audiences. The result is a series that acknowledges both the mythic scope of American expansion and the ordinary acts of courage and compassion that shaped communities.
“Little House on the Prairie” follows a string of contemporary reimaginings that aim to bring classic texts into dialogue with modern sensibilities, showing both the continuities and tensions between past and present. For audiences who grew up with Wilder’s books or the original television series, this adaptation promises fresh perspectives without abandoning the affection that made the stories enduring.
As the series premieres, cast members said they are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to a narrative that has offered generations a sense of belonging and moral guidance.
“We’re so blessed that we get to go on this journey and be a part of this story together,” Bracey said. “It’s thoroughly enjoyable, and that’s something I think we all feel very lucky for.”
“Little House on the Prairie,” starring Alice Halsey, Luke Bracey, Crosby Fitzgerald, and Skywalker Hughes, debuts on Netflix July 9. Watch an exclusive interview with the cast and DeWayne Hamby below.
