Comedian Nate Bargatze’s debut film “The Breadwinner,” releasing May 29, brings warmth and family to the big screen in a film designed for audiences of all ages.

Directed by Eric Appel and backed by Wonder Project, the PG-rated comedy moved from a spring release to Memorial Day weekend after early screenings convinced studio executives it would play best when schools were out.

“They realized how much bigger the reach could be in middle of the summer, when everyone’s out of school,” Producer Jeremy Latcham said, explaining the decision to shift the release. “It was a really great weekend when we screened the movie one last time, and they saw how well it had performed with families.”

Bargatze, the popular stand-up whose stage material spans generations, is at the center of a film that the creative team deliberately kept family-friendly.

“From the very outset, you know, this movie was intended to be a PG comedy,” Latcham said. “Nate’s comedy is inherently that. Nate was an incredible barometer at every turn for that agenda. If a joke was pitched that was not appropriate, they would say, ‘Nope, that doesn’t work for my audience.’”

That approach reflects both a marketing strategy and a creative ethic: make something broadly accessible without diluting character or emotion. Latcham recalled attending two of Bargatze’s performances in one day — a matinee that filled a small Indiana arena with children and grandparents, and an evening show of couples on dates — and seeing the same material land with both crowds.

“It played equally well in both rooms,” he said. “We don’t need things to be provocative or outrageous to be funny. We need them to be real and relatable and human.”

The film’s emotional center posed an early test. Production scheduling required shooting some of the most intense scenes in the second week, prompting Latcham and the director to watch Bargatze closely.

“We were going to find out if Nate has the emotional chops of an actor,” he said. “And sure enough we see this moment with him and Mandy of true emotion. And you’re like, ‘all right, he’s got it’.”

Despite a grueling schedule — Bargatze continued to tour on weekends while shooting — Latcham said the star showed up every day ready to work.

“He slept very little while he was making this movie,” Latcham said. “The guy’s the hardest working dude. He really showed up every day for it.”

Scenes in the film nod to a lived faith without turning the picture into a faith movie. Latcham acknowledged discrete, authentic details — a calendar that includes Sunday school and church — but said the story does not “dive into the faith journey explicitly. But I do think the struggles that they’re going through will be familiar to family, all kinds of families. (With my family) being a Christian family here in Texas, I think we found it really relatable,” he said.

The film’s makers were intentional about preserving the authenticity of family life.

“Even to put that on the calendar, to me, is a step,” Latcham said, noting that many films historically have stripped outward signs of faith in the name of broad appeal.

Bargatze’s comedic voice informs much of the film’s tone, Latcham said, and the screenplay was careful not to take his core audience too far afield.

“You’ll feel like a lot of the family comedy that he’s talked about over the years adapted onto the screen in a really fun way that I think will feel fresh and new, but also warm and familiar and comforting,” Latcham said.

Latcham, who has worked on major studio franchises such as “Iron Man” and “Guardians of the Galaxy,” now focuses on projects “that soften the coarseness of the country,” and called the movie a labor of love.

“I think we’re make some really good stuff that softens the coarseness of the country,” he said.  “We want people to go out to the movies, have an experience, go home, talk about it, and really enjoy each other, because that’s what the movie’s for.”

“The Breadwinner,” directed by Eric Appel and starring Nate Bargatze, Mandy Moore, Colin Jost, Zach Cherry, Martin Herlihy, Kate Berlant with Kumail Nanjiani and Will Forte, opens on May 29 from Wonder Project and TriStar Pictures. Many theaters are honoring a special “Nate Rate” matinee price for evening showings to allow for more families to see it together.
