‘Reminders of Him’ Director on Story of Hope, Redemption 2026-03-12T12:30:20-04:00 DeWayne Hamby

Director Vanessa Caswill (“Love at First Sight”) said she was drawn to the themes of redemption, compassion and forgiveness at the heart of Colleen Hoover’s novel “Reminders of Him” when bringing it to the screen, calling the source material “a very good match” for her sensibilities as a filmmaker.

Hoover, whose books have sold more than 20 million copies, has had numerous New York Times bestsellers, including “It Ends with Us” and “Hopeless.” “Reminders of Him” once again features romantic elements but also delves into hope and second chances, which appealed to Caswill.

“I was sent the script by Colleen’s producing partner, Lauren Levine, and she just said, ‘I think you’re going to really respond to this’,” Caswill said. “I hadn’t read any of Colleen’s books, actually, but I really responded to the script, I really responded to the themes in it.” Later, Caswill pored through the novel and loved it. Follow-up conversations with Hoover and Levine sealed the deal.

The film follows Kenna (Maika Monroe) as she returns to her Wyoming hometown after serving time in prison, determined to rebuild her life and reconnect with the young daughter she has never known. The story, adapted by Hoover and shaped for the screen under Caswill’s direction, explores the complexities of motherhood, community judgment and the possibility of forgiveness.

Caswill said the emotional center of the film is populated by characters she found impossible to resist. “I was probably quite drawn in by Diemm and Lady Diana, because they’re so pure and innocent in it,” she said. “There is a real gorgeousness to them.” At the same time, she said she had “a great love for every character,” calling the film “a beautiful ensemble piece” in which each role contributes to the story’s tapestry.

The cast includes Monroe as Kenna; Tyriq Withers as Ledger, a former NFL player and local bar owner who forms an unexpected bond with Kenna; Lauren Graham and Bradley Whitford as Diem’s custodial grandparents; Rudy Pankow as Scotty, Diem’s father; Lainey Wilson as Kenna’s friend and coworker Amy; and a supporting ensemble that Caswill praised for its dedication.

“Tyrique Withers and Michael Monroe were carrying the heart of the story, and I think they did it with so much depth and gave a lot of themselves to it,” she said.

Caswill also noted the film’s contemporary relevance in a divisive social climate.

“I think that’s one of the reasons I felt like this film was so important at this time,” she said.

She added that the film asks audiences to reconsider quick judgments and consider the humanity beneath mistakes and missteps.

“One of the things I liked about the story is that they’re flawed characters, they’re not perfect, and none of us are,” Caswill said. That vulnerability, she added, is central to the film’s emotional appeal. She said she hoped viewers would come away with a message of understanding.

The film’s plot centers on Kenna’s attempt to re-establish contact with her daughter, Diem, who has been raised by her grandparents since Kenna’s prison sentence. The grandparents, played by Graham and Whitford, are initially unyielding in their refusal to permit contact. As Kenna struggles, she finds both compassion and a tentative romantic connection with Ledger, whose involvement raises the stakes for both.

Caswill said the story resonated with her on a human level.

“I’m human, and I made lots of mistakes, as we all have,” she said.

She recalled the power of small acts of kindness and second chances — themes that anchor the film.

“If you’re like me and my life, there have been people who have thrown lifelines when I didn’t deserve it necessarily,” she said. Those lifelines, she said, can shift the arc of a life toward healing.

The director highlighted the film’s emotional precision and the collaborative spirit on set. She complimented Withers and Monroe for shouldering the emotional weight and praised the broader ensemble for contributing to what she described as a “gorgeous” and vital story. The film’s combination of a bestselling source novel and a committed cast and crew, Caswill suggested, created an opportunity to explore universal themes without melodrama.

The story weaves elements of romance, regret and redemption into a narrative about identity and parenthood. Caswill said the project succeeded because it allowed characters to be seen as whole people rather than archetypes. “I have a great love for every character in it,” she said. “I feel like they’re all important aspects of the tapestry of the story.”

“Reminders of Him,” written by Colleen Hoover and Lauren Levine, directed by Vanessa Caswill, and starring Maika Monroe, Tyriq Withers. Rudy Pankow, Lainey Wilson, Lauren Graham, and Bradley Whitford releases March 13 from Universal Pictures.
