Investigative journalist Billy Hallowell’s new documentary, “Investigating the Supernatural: Angels and Demons,” aims to probe one of humanity’s oldest questions with a reporter’s skepticism and a storyteller’s eye for the extraordinary. The film, which launches March 16, mixes cinematic reenactments, expert interviews and eyewitness testimony to examine claims of angelic intervention, miraculous healing and demonic activity.

One of those stories belongs to Bruce Van Natta, whose near-death experience and dramatic recovery are featured in the film. Van Natta described a workplace accident that left him crushed beneath a truck and later revived multiple times by first responders and, he says, by divine agents.
“I was underneath the truck,” Van Natta said. “The Jack slipped out, and 10-12,000 pounds of steel fell across the middle of my body crushed me in half. In five places, arteries were severed, and I just called out and said, ‘Lord, help me.’ God sent two angels, and then He sent a lady bring me back to life three times.”
Van Natta said he saw towering angelic figures during moments when his heart had stopped.
“I got to see the angels, eight feet tall, big angels, one from each side, putting their hands in little my body,” he said. Medical staff later revived him and he completed more than a year of hospitalization. “They say, I’m the only person that’s lived that they can find the world with arteries severed in five places,” he said.
Hallowell said Van Natta’s account—combining physical trauma, apparent divine intervention and a reported out-of-body experience—epitomizes the kinds of cases his team sought because they include multiple, potentially verifiable elements.
“Bruce’s story is incredible, because he has every single thing that you could want in a miraculous in this story: physical healing. You have an angel. You have an NDE (near death experience) where he rose above his body. And you literally have every piece of there’s very few stories that have all of that so and verifiable,” Hallowell said.
The documentary seeks to walk a tightrope between faith-based storytelling and investigative rigor. Hallowell emphasized the project’s commitment to evidence.
“When we talked about our first film ‘Miracles,’ it was very important for us to have facts. ‘Can we prove that this is true?’ Or can we give you the information as a viewer and let you make the decision?” He said ‘Angels and Demons’ takes the same approach with encounters involving both angels and demons.
Hallowell also acknowledged the cultural asymmetry in how people perceive spiritual phenomena.
“The average person is more likely to believe in demons than angels,” he said, and suggested part of that is the way darker phenomena are portrayed in popular media. “Demons stick around. They want to be seen. They want to inhabit, they want to oppress, they they’re trying to be noticed. Angels don’t stick around. They come, they deliver a message, they help, they leave.”
That perceived persistence makes demonic accounts easier to document, Hallowell said, and presents pastoral and theological questions for viewers. He cited Ephesians 6 as a framework for understanding the stakes. “Ephesians six tells us we’re in this battle,” he said. “If you don’t know you’re in it, you certainly can’t win.”
The film also touches briefly on encounters often labeled as alien phenomena, a topic Hallowell said requires careful interpretation.
“The question to me isn’t—are people seeing things they can’t explain,” he said. “The question is—what are they actually seeing?” he said, noting that some experiences commonly described as extraterrestrial could have spiritual explanations.
Hallowell said the project has affected him personally, prompting deeper reflection on belief and practice. “These projects have been amazing because they’ve really pointed me back and made me think a lot more about, Do I really believe the things I say I believe, and do I really understand Ephesians 6 and what is going on?” he said.
The film’s producers are also collecting additional testimony. Hallowell invited viewers to submit experiences and follow-up information, saying online engagement will help build a broader public record. He cited polling that, he said, underscores public interest.
“Over 80% of Americans believe in a spiritual dimension,” he said, adding that forthcoming data with the American Bible Society and CBN will shed more light on specific claims about angels and demons.
“Investigating the Supernatural: Angels and Demons,” directed by Jerrod Anderson, will be available March 16 on the CBN Family App, accompanied by a podcast series that aims to expand the conversation and provide a platform for firsthand testimony. Whether viewers accept the accounts as literal spiritual encounters, neurological phenomena or something else, Hallowell said the film intends to give audiences the evidence and let them decide. “Not everybody is going to believe in these things,” he said. “But it is interesting.”
