A new documentary delving into the historical and spiritual significance of “The Lord’s Prayer” is offering viewers an immersive journey through biblical landscapes, challenging viewers’ preconceived notions about one of Christianity’s most recited prayers.

The film, currently streaming on Angel Studios, is the culmination of a six-year project that aims to bring the prayer’s context and meaning to a global audience. The host and teacher Brad Gray describes the film as more than just a religious documentary, but a “cinematic odyssey through biblical landscapes.”
“99.9% of even practicing believers will never set foot in the Holy Lands,” Gray explained. “We wanted to create the highest quality documentary series ever done on the Bible, helping people understand the most powerful prayer in human history.”
The project goes beyond traditional biblical storytelling, offering a multi-platform approach that includes a documentary film, a seven-part episodic series, and a companion book titled “Bringing Heaven Here.”
Director Joel Edwards highlighted the documentary’s unique approach to storytelling, emphasizing the importance of contextual understanding.
“Looking at the Lord’s Prayer in context — its history, geography, and literary design — is a game-changer,” Edwards said. “It’s a before-and-after moment. Once you see it that way, you can’t unsee it.”
The documentary’s creation was not without challenges. Filmed during the global pandemic and amid regional conflicts, the production faced significant obstacles. Gray recalled filming during a period when Iran launched 200 drones toward Israel, creating uncertainty about the project’s continuation.
“We just prayed together,” Gray said. “We didn’t feel like God had brought us halfway around the world to send us back after two days.”
Surprisingly, these challenges presented unique opportunities. With travel restricted and tourist sites nearly empty, the film crew gained unprecedented access to historically significant locations.
“There are scenes in the film where there’s literally no one [present],” Edwards noted. “Usually, these sites are crowded with tourists, signs, and crowd management systems. We were able to capture these locations in their pure, unobstructed state.”
One of the documentary’s most unexpected achievements has been its appeal to younger generations. Despite the dense historical and theological content, the film has resonated with viewers as young as 10 to 16 years old.
“The hunger in younger generations has really been surprising,” Edwards said. “We worked hard to make it experiential, pairing scripture, history, and text with live-action cinematography and visual effects.”
The documentary’s ultimate goal extends beyond entertainment. Gray expressed a vision of inspiring 100 million people to engage deeply with the Lord’s Prayer.
“Our hope is that once somebody has watched the film, they’ve read the book, they’ve watched the series, they’ll never go another day of their life not saying the Lord’s Prayer,” Gray emphasized. “And they’ll know what they’re actually praying.”
The film breaks down each phrase of the Lord’s Prayer, offering viewers a comprehensive exploration of its theological and historical significance. By combining on-location filming, historical context, and innovative storytelling techniques, the documentary aims to breathe new life into a prayer that has become routine for many.
“The problem is, it’s become so familiar that it’s become unfamiliar,” Gray explained. “When you begin to experience it the way it was intended, it is bursting with life and energy and excitement.”
The Lord’s Prayer documentary and accompanying series are now available for streaming on Angel Studios, with more information accessible at TheLordsPrayer.com.
