Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
Authors Jason and Rhonda Halbert (pen named “R.J. Halbert”) are set to release their second novel “SERVANT” on November 18, continuing a trilogy that delves deep into family dynamics, spiritual exploration, and generational complexities.

The husband-and-wife writing team, known for their debut novel “Caretaker,” have crafted a narrative that goes beyond traditional storytelling, offering readers a nuanced exploration of faith and personal discovery.
“We actually created the entire trilogy all at once,” Rhonda Halbert explained. “We knew exactly where Book Two was going to go, and we actually know where book three is going to go.”
The new novel promises to unravel intricate family mysteries, with a unique focus on generational narratives that span thousands of years. “Book Two starts to dive into generational curses,” Rhonda revealed, “and some of this generational curse can be traveled back 3000 years before the modern-day family that we’ve put into this story.”
Central to the novel’s approach is a subtle yet profound examination of spiritual experiences. Jason Halbert noted that the characters are “dealing with a deity” and exploring communication in deeply personal ways. “We don’t want to reveal any mysteries, but our characters are dealing with how they hear the spiritual in different ways,” he said.
Rhonda emphasizes the book’s intentional openness, stating their goal is to challenge readers to listen to what she calls “that still, small voice.” When signing books, she often writes “listen to the whispers” – an invitation for readers to quiet external noise and tune into deeper spiritual insights.
The authors’ approach to writing stems from a commitment to authenticity. “If you write for the purpose of feedback, or if you write for other people, it’s never as authentic as you would want it,” Jason explained. Their collaborative process involves extensive dialogue, with Rhonda recording Jason’s verbal processing and then crafting the narrative.
Readers can expect an audiobook version to accompany the novel’s release. “We will be releasing an audio book for book two,” Rhonda confirmed. “It will not be the full production like we did for Book One just yet, but it will be out soon.”
The novel arrives amid a busy period for the couple. Jason, known for his work as musical director for Kelly Clarkson, is simultaneously managing a Vegas residency, a television project, and work on the trilogy’s third installment. They’re also in the process of moving into a home that served as inspiration for their first book.
Early reader responses have been overwhelmingly positive. “We’ve been blown away,” Jason said. “We’ve had tons of personal stories of people that have experienced in the book what we hope for them to experience, which was some introspection, some ways to deal with trauma, joy, intrigue.”
The Halberts view their writing as more than entertainment – it’s a platform for personal exploration and healing. “Our hope was to write characters that people could identify with,” Rhonda noted, “and we are getting feedback from people leaving us very genuine, heartfelt, beautiful stories.”
“SERVANT” will be available November 18, with the audiobook following shortly after, promising readers another immersive journey into the Halberts’ carefully crafted world. For more information or to pre-order the book, click here.
