Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
In her latest documentary “Mr. Scorsese,” filmmaker Rebecca Miller dives deep into the complex spiritual life of legendary director Martin Scorsese, revealing a portrait of faith, struggle, and artistic exploration.

The series illuminates Scorsese’s profound Catholic upbringing, rooted in a neighborhood where sacred and profane coexisted dramatically.
“He was sandwiched between a Catholic church where he was confirmed and a social club run by John Gotti after he murdered John Paul Castellano,” Miller explained.
The filmmaker discovered that Catholicism served as a sanctuary for the young Scorsese. “His early experience of Catholicism and the religion and the ritual was very much a balm and a feeling of safety and beauty and kind of a place to hide,” she said.
Scorsese’s spiritual journey is characterized by continuous questioning and exploration, particularly evident in his film “Silence,” which Miller describes as a profound meditation on faith. The movie centers on a priest who must choose between renouncing his faith to save others or maintaining his spiritual integrity.
“In ‘Silence,’ a priest needs to make a choice where he either renounces his faith in order to save other people who are being tortured,” Miller noted. “His choice to do that is, in a way, the most Christian thing that he does.”
The documentary also explores Scorsese’s controversial 1988 film “The Last Temptation of Christ,” which sparked global protests and anti-Semitic backlash. Miller reveals Scorsese was “shocked and saddened” by the violent response to a film he intended to help viewers understand Jesus more deeply.
Throughout the documentary, Scorsese describes his faith as a lifelong journey of discovery. “He describes it as feeling his way in the dark,” Miller said. “He believes you won’t really understand your faith until you’re dead.”
This spiritual complexity is deeply intertwined with Scorsese’s cinematic vision. Growing up in a neighborhood where five mafia families coexisted with religious institutions, Scorsese developed a unique perspective on morality, violence, and redemption.
Miller was drawn to documenting Scorsese’s spiritual evolution, seeing it as a fascinating exploration of a complex character. “I was really fascinated by how his spiritual journey worked within the scope of his films, and the violence in some of the films,” she explained.
The documentary emerged from a long-standing professional acquaintance between Miller and Scorsese, which began during the filming of “Gangs of New York.” Miller approached Scorsese’s producing partner with the documentary concept, believing she could offer a unique perspective.
Notably, the project began during the pandemic, with Miller and her producers self-financing initial interviews and filming outdoors. This homemade approach mirrors the personal nature of the documentary’s exploration of Scorsese’s inner world.
When presented with the finished product, Miller said the legendary director was satisfied with his life portrayed on screen.
“I think anybody watching a chronicle of their life that way would be moved,” she said. “But he was very honest, as far as anybody you know can be. He was very forthright and honest and brave, and I think he’s happy with the film that came out of it.”
“Mr. Scorsese,” directed by Rebecca Miller, is currently streaming on AppleTV.
