Gili Gould Talks ‘Dot Conner: Webtective,’ Fun and Faith 2025-09-10T21:50:26-04:00 DeWayne Hamby
Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
The new film “Dot Conner: Webtective,” releasing Sept. 19 features Gili Gould reprising her role as the lead character beginning her first year of high school. In the process, she uncovers a mystery that propels her on a new adventure of espionage, danger, and hidden treasure. Recently, Gould spoke to Reel Faith about the transition from the small screen to the megaplex and what it means for Dot to be a role model for Christian youth.

It’s exciting that the film is coming out. How cool is that?
I’m super excited for it, especially because we started the series about five years ago, and it’s just slowly progressed into this feature film that it is now, so it’s really just a big fulfillment of hard work honestly.
I’m sure you have met people through the years, as your audience has grown. Tell me how they respond to your series. What has it is meant to them through the years?
I think, from a kid perspective, I always get “You guys are so funny. It’s so much fun watching you guys.” And to me, that affects me a lot, which I know saying something is funny is so baseline. But because my wish for Dot and my wish just for viewers is that they see our show as so much fun and they see Christianity as so much fun. So, I love hearing kids say that to me. From an adult perspective, we get all the time that it’s just something that they’re happy that their kids are watching, which, again, is such a joy to hear. And it’s also I hear that they call us great role models, which is so honoring, and I’m so appreciative of that. Just that they can really recognize the hard work and that we’re stepping outside of something that’s never been done before. So, I think just the recognition that we’ve gotten has been so fulfilling.
When did the idea for the movie start? What was the big differences in making a movie?
When I heard it was going to be a movie, I was over the moon. I know Andy talked about how he had about five episodes written for a season two, and then he just kind of transitioned over, “Let’s put them all together and make a movie.” And I was so down. Just the differences between going from the miniseries to this film has been so eye opening. We started the series, the cast was very small. It was like five to 10 people per episode, and then the crew itself was very small, but obviously very efficient. So then transitioning into the feature film, our cast has grown met a lot of really cool, new people that I’m friends with, probably for the rest of my life. And just the extensive crew, it really showed me how many parts a working movie is what I really get to see it behind the scenes. It also really puts it into perspective how much work they put in in the miniseries to achieve something that now for the feature film, it takes about 30 people.
Gilli, how much you alike are you and Dot? And how different are you?
So, Dot and I, I’ve grown up with her, so we’ve both kind of grown together. And so.is starting her first year of high school. That’s where the movie kicks off. And this year I started my first year of college. So it definitely is kind of like a little sister to me. I just wanted care of her. But at the same time, Dot and I are so alike in the sense that we’re both very curious. And I think my biggest similarity is we both have such a strong sense of justice. I’ve always been the type to stick up for the underdog. I’ve always been the type to figure out what went wrong, why it went wrong, and how I can fix it. I’m a problem solver, and I think that has also made playing dots so easy and so much fun, because it’s basically, I get to play parts of myself when I’m in this film, so the age difference can sometimes show. I do think Dot might be a little more naive than me, but I’m also in a completely different life stage. BDut I find that there’s more similarities than differences.
As fans come up to you, or as, like you said, what do you share with your viewers? Maybe the lessons you’ve learned growing up, or any kind of encouragement that you have for them, if you want to share that here.
Something that I always love to share when doing interviews like this, and that I’ve already kind of talked about, but it’s really so heavy on my heart to just express how fun being a Christian can be, and how sometimes it can seem daunting and it can seem very much like a set of rules. But I think that God created so much wonder in the world, and he created he put curiosity inside of us to not only seek him out, but to seek out his creation and just to seek out the things around us. So definitely, one of the major things that I want viewers to see is that being a Christian can be an adventure. It’s a mystery in itself. I think God’s creation is a mystery too, and it’s one that we try to seek out, and one that we try to just, I don’t know, go to Him and try to seek Him out in that every single day. That’s definitely something that is so heavy on my heart for this project.
What do you have coming up next after this?
To be completely honest, I’ve always said that when I start college, I’m going to see wherever the Lord takes me. And I think that it just happens to be a funny little coincidence that this movie comes out right when I start college, so I’m 100% putting it in the Lord’s hands. I’m not going to push anything. I think He’s going to lead me in the direction that I’m meant to be in. And if this movie just explodes in the way that I believe it will, and I believe that it should, I think that God’s going to push me into the direction of Christian film and just keep pursuing that. But if that’s not my path, then I accept that, and I think God knows what’s right for me.
