Amazon MGM Studios has released the first look and behind-the-scenes featurette of George Clooney’s latest directorial effort, “The Boys in the Boat,” starring Joel Edgerton and Callum Turner. The film, releasing Christmas Day, is based on the New York Times bestselling novel of the same name by Daniel James Brown.

The featurette shows the rowing team from 1936 as they compete against several teams before going to the Olympics to face off against Nazi-occupied Germany.

“‘The Boys in the Boat’ is about strong, tough kids, but they were poor and hungry,” Clooney says in the video. “They’re rowing because it’s the only way they could stay in college.”

Clooney continues: “Every film we’ve ever seen that has an underdog in it, you’re always rooting for them. That you could pull yourself up from nothing and succeed.”

The official synopsis for “The Boys in the Boat” follows:

The Boys in the Boat is a sports drama based on the #1 New York Times bestselling non-fiction novel written by Daniel James Brown. The film, directed by George Clooney, is about the 1936 University of Washington rowing team that competed for gold at the Summer Olympics in Berlin. This inspirational true story follows a group of underdogs at the height of the Great Depression as they are thrust into the spotlight and take on elite rivals from around the world.

The film will release in theaters on December 25, 2023. Watch the first look featurette below:
