Why I Converted to Judaism from Christianity

When I converted, I didn’t just decide to leave the faith I’d been in for 25 years. I was forced to leave when I realized that I’d been living a life both G-d and Jesus had already testified against. As I studied the scriptures for my religion degree, I couldn’t believe the pattern I was seeing in the text. However, soon I couldn’t deny it. Read plainly, it sounded as though both G-d and Jesus were warning against the very kind of religion I had been taught to call faith. G-d and Jesus testified against the teachings of Christianity and supported Judaism. Thus, I converted from Christianity to Judaism.

The Law Is Not Dead in Judaism or Christianity

Both G-d and Jesus commanded us to follow the law. G-d clearly says in Deuteronomy 12:32, “Be careful to do all I command.” In Matthew 5:19, Jesus says, “Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” These are not gentle words meant to be reinterpreted or questioned. They are commands. Straight talk. So how can we justify a system that tells us the law is dead and salvation is through grace?  How can we ignore that both the people we claim to worship supported the teaching of Judaism, not Christianity? This wasn’t the first time Jesus confronted this issue. In Mark 7, he directly accuses religious leaders of setting aside the command of G-d in favor of their own traditions, even saying they had made the word of G-d void by what they taught. That is not a minor disagreement. It is a direct warning about what happens when a religious system begins to override the text it claims to uphold.

More importantly, both Jesus and G-d confirmed that obedience is more important than belief. G-d says in Ezekiel 18:26–27 that righteousness can be lost or gained by actions. That is very straightforward. Jesus says in the Gospel of John 14:15 that love is proven by obedience. The standard for being righteous according to both G-d and Jesus is obedience and following the commandments. This leaves no room for theology that teaches salvation by blood or grace.

Christianity: Think NOT

Further, every time Jesus said “Think Not,” that’s exactly what Christians thought. I don’t think that’s a coincidence, but rather Jesus speaking directly to what he foresaw coming in his followers. Jesus said, “Think not that I came to abolish the law.” So, the belief that the law is dead because of him is unacceptable. This is especially true because he continues by saying, “Not one letter of the law shall ever pass away,” and “Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” Jesus was against both not obeying the law and teaching others that they do not have to obey the law, which is exactly what Christianity does.

Jesus also said, “Think not that I came to bring peace. I came to bring a sword.”  Yet, Christianity talks about him as the prince of peace. They base their religion on being passive and gentle. But Jesus said he came to bring a sword, to turn brother against brother.  That is the opposite of the prince of peace. It seems Jesus was looking ahead to what Christians would get wrong and testifying against it beforehand. This is one reason I converted to Judaism from Christianity.

Judaism: G-d is One

Similarly, G-d also seemed to foresee what was coming with Christianity and specifically spoke to it. G-d says, “I am the Lord your G-d. The Lord your G-d is ONE.” That seems a strange thing to say, until you think about the fact that years later Christianity began to teach that G-d is three. Then it suddenly makes sense. G-d spoke to trinity theology preemptively. He made it very clear to any reader of the word that G-d is not three or three in one. G-d is one.  Why would he phrase it that way, unless he knew that a false doctrine was coming? G-d testified against trinity theology.

He did the same with the idea of a savior who could forgive the sins of others through his death. He said, “I am the Lord your G-d and apart from me there is no savior.” Further, he also said, no man can give his life as a ransom for the sins of another. With these words, G-d made it clear there can be no room for a theology based on salvation by blood. G-d very clearly said that Jesus cannot be the savior claimed by Christianity. Only G-d is the savior, and no person may give their life for the sins of another.

G-d Is Not a Man as in Christianity

Finally, G-d spoke to the idea of His having a mortal son. He said, “Then say to Pharaoh, ‘This is what the LORD says: Israel is my firstborn son.” Israel is G-d’s first born, not Jesus. This means Jesus cannot be the only begotten son of G-d. Israel came first.

Further, G-d said, “God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?” Thus, if G-d is not a man or the son of a man, then a mortal cannot be or become G-d. Jesus then cannot be divine, having been born to humans. G-d is not the son of man. That is a direct testimony by G-d against the divinity of Jesus.

With these verses so plainly spoken by the two most important characters in the Bible it became impossible to deny that both had preemptively testified against Christianity and in favor of Judaism. Further, it became clear that to obey either meant to obey the law. There was no conclusion to be made, but one. Judaism is the true faith.   So, after 25 years as a Christian, I converted to Judaism from Christianity.
