My Daughter’s Engagement Ring

Last updated on: August 22, 2014 at 4:02 pm   By Rebecca Frech

As of last night, my eldest daughter is wearing an engagement ring. For the record, her father and I are delighted to see her wearing it. Isn’t it pretty? 17 years old and a freshman in college, she’s no longer only having to deal with boys who are interested in her….she’s now dealing with men…and it’s frustrating her. The male friends she hangs out with and the sweet boys from church and our homeschool group are nothing compared to the... Read more

Our Real Life Fairy Tale

Last updated on: January 13, 2015 at 9:16 am   By Rebecca Frech

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who lived in our house who was very shy. She cried when strangers even looked in her direction and once begged to not be forced to wear her new dress on Easter morning because “People will talk to me if I’m cute.” After leaving the grocery store dozens of times carrying a hysterical girl to whom a stranger had dared to speak, we made a button for her to wear on... Read more

Pro-Life March — we need to hear from the dads

Last updated on: August 22, 2014 at 4:02 pm   By Rebecca Frech

I’ve been watching the Pro-Life March on Washington for most of today. I’ve smiled at how young the protesters look, marveled at the immense size of the crowd, and listened intently to the speakers. I’m in awe of this whole pro-life movement and how they continue to stand up for their fellow human beings without becoming discouraged. It’s been 41 years since Roe v. Wade, and yet this huge crowd of close to a half million people fills the streets... Read more

Daydreaming

Last updated on: August 22, 2014 at 4:02 pm   By Rebecca Frech

On the way home from Mass yesterday morning, our 9-year-old said wistfully that she’d love to move to Hawaii or New Orleans. She didn’t seem to care very much which one, but both seemed exotic and exciting to her. Her father and I joined in her game of make believe and talked about the places we’d go if we could sell everything and just pick up and go. He talked of mountains or wide open spaces, while I dreamed as... Read more

A Mother Gone, A Daughter Missing (part 2)

Last updated on: August 22, 2014 at 4:02 pm   By Rebecca Frech

She sat on the couch in our living room holding our newly-born #5. She kissed his downy black hair, lifted him to her shoulder and said, “I don’t understand your life. I don’t understand how you got here.” I knew instantly what she meant – this wasn’t supposed to be the life I had. Her daughter was never supposed to be a stay-at-home mom with a litter of children. I had been raised by a forward-thinking woman who had praised... Read more

A Mother Gone, A Daughter Missing (part 1)

Last updated on: August 22, 2014 at 4:02 pm   By Rebecca Frech

In May, it will be twenty-five years since we lost my mom. There are days when it’s been so long that I can’t even remember what she was like. I no longer have the memories of her laugh or her voice anywhere in my mind. I don’t know the sound of her footsteps any longer. I can’t recall how she sounded when she sang. I no longer know the touch of her hand, or the comforting feeling of being held... Read more

Wardrobe Inequality

Last updated on: August 22, 2014 at 4:02 pm   By Rebecca Frech

We’re now on day 11 of no washer. The part we need got stuck somewhere in Illinois thanks to the Polar Vortex. I’m not sure when it’s going to be fixed, but I’m beginning to think we’re going to have to wait until Spring. Every time I start to think that we should just bag it all and get a new one, the tracking number on the part shows that it’s moving again and I start to hope. Somewhere around... Read more

Someday They’ll Tell Their Therapists All About This

Last updated on: August 22, 2014 at 4:02 pm   By Rebecca Frech

Our washer broke last week. That’s not a good thing in a household which includes 7 children, just in case you were wondering. The repairman has been out here twice and it’s still not fixed. It needs a new switch, which I would think was simple, but that switch is in another state and the whole country is in the middle of ice. We’re out of clean clothes. I went to Target on Friday and bought underwear for all, but... Read more

Looking Forward

Last updated on: August 22, 2014 at 4:02 pm   By Rebecca Frech

I’ve kept an eye on my Facebook feed all day. It seems as if everyone I know is spending at least a part of the past few days looking back over the year that was. There are scores of pictures being re-shared, and “best of” lists abound. I love looking at my friends’ lives in review, but I don’t feel compelled to create one for myself. (Is that weird?) By anyone’s standards, this was a good year for me, but... Read more

Because I Had to Share This

Last updated on: August 22, 2014 at 4:02 pm   By Rebecca Frech

Let’s be honest, that nasty pee smell in the bathroom is the bane of mothers of little boys. We try everything to get rid of it, and it just comes back. I don’t know why my four sons (and their friends) are incapable of actually peeing IN the toilet instead of hitting every object around it, but I’m seriously considering a rule that say “Everyone Must Sit to Pee.” I don’t think that’s at all rash or inappropriate. If you’d... Read more
