Wildfires, Hurricanes, and Ezekiel’s Unheeded Warning

Last updated on: September 9, 2017 at 8:59 pm   By Rebecca Florence Miller

I’m going to try something for a while, in an effort to engage more constructively with Scripture, rather than only writing about the frustrations I have. I would to build up what is good, not just tear down what is bad. I will still write about social issues and the arts as time allows, but I will be writing each weekend on the lectionary Scriptures for the weekend. I hope to make these messages relevant to current times and to... Read more

Devastating, Searing, and Nuanced: Kathryn Bigelow’s DETROIT

Last updated on: August 8, 2017 at 4:25 pm   By Rebecca Florence Miller

I saw the film Detroit (directed by Kathryn Bigelow) this weekend. I left the theatre shaken, grieving what a violent, bloodthirsty country America is and always has been and grieving the continued cries of the oppressed for justice. The film is based around an incident that occurred at the Algiers Motel during the 1967 conflict between police and black citizens in Detroit. (White people tend to call this five-day episode “the riots,” while the black community–and this film–tends to call it... Read more

What Flannery O’Connor Might Say to Christian Moviemakers, Musicians, and Artists

Last updated on: August 2, 2017 at 7:35 am   By Rebecca Florence Miller

For many, barely-Christian thought, even that which dips its toe affirmatively in heretical thinking or just plain lazy Christianity is fine, as long as it’s “clean.” Read more

Jessica Fulford: What Working With Kosovar Albanian Muslims Taught Me about Loving Refugees

Last updated on: July 18, 2017 at 2:05 pm   By Rebecca Florence Miller

This guest post is by a dear friend of mine, Jessica Fulford. She is one of the kindest, wisest, and most faithful disciples of Jesus I know. I am so grateful she’s been willing to share her story of working with Kosovar Albanians Muslims with my readers. I hope she will inspire other Christians to let go of a mindset of fear and follow in the footsteps of our Lord. It was the summer of my sophomore year of college.... Read more

Public Outbursts About Eugene Peterson and Jen Hatmaker Reveal Wider Christian Issues

Last updated on: July 17, 2017 at 9:01 am   By Rebecca Florence Miller

We make gay people our scapegoats so we don't have to look at our own lives. We, as a church, are so darn sure that we are better than gay people. Read more

David Brooks’s Opinion Piece on Barriers Erected by the Educated Class

Last updated on: July 11, 2017 at 8:19 pm   By Rebecca Florence Miller

Today’s post is not particularly religious. But I still think it’s important. In today’s New York Times, David Brooks writes, Status rules are partly about collusion, about attracting educated people to your circle, tightening the bonds between you and erecting shields against everybody else. We in the educated class have created barriers to mobility that are more devastating for being invisible. The rest of America can’t name them, can’t understand them. They just know they’re there. I agree with Brooks’s... Read more

Praying the Serenity Prayer in an Unjust World

Last updated on: May 6, 2019 at 2:06 pm   By Rebecca Florence Miller
