An Interview with the Christian and Atheist Friends Who Host the Podcast ASSUMPTIONS

An Interview with the Christian and Atheist Friends Who Host the Podcast ASSUMPTIONS 2017-11-16T17:42:43-06:00 Rebecca Florence Miller

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

What lessons have you both learned about communication through your friendship? How could these lessons apply to our current polarized landscape?

Daniel: Our friendship emerged out of a common life together. We became friends because we worked together. Then we started watching movies together, and eating meals. Now we are co-creators in a creative venture. Cultivating this kind of common life is essential for community. I would also add that we both genuinely enjoy each other (even when Kyle makes fun of me). I really admire Kyle, and I find him very unique. As a result I value his opinions. Our genuine curiosity in each other’s opinions is founded in this mutual respect. And from the beginning, there has been a shared sense of vulnerability. My faith is strong, and yet I’m not afraid to admit to Kyle how difficult it can be at times.

In our current political and cultural landscape, it is important to remember that those who hold opposing views are people, not enemies. So get to know them! I also think the long form of a podcast discussion is much more helpful than the quickly read sound bites of our digital age. Finally, our goal in the podcast is never been to have a three-match showdown. We have many more seasons planned. These are important questions and they can’t be solved overnight. People need time! I know I do. I would encourage others to take a long view when discussing these kinds of issues.

Kyle: If you’re entering into a conversation with the mindset that you have to “win” or cause a “gotcha” moment then you’re setting yourself on a course of failure. Because Daniel and I are friends, the conversations that we have are always so that we can understand the other person more fully. We are doing this with respect and platonic love of each other.

I think the media could do a better job of being emotionally and intellectually honest. Having different points of view doesn’t necessitate conflict.

Finally, what are your goals for the future of the podcast?

Daniel: I’m excited for Season 2! Sexuality is such a touchy subject, but I think placing it within the context of community and relationships will make the discussion less volatile.

Kyle: I, personally, would like it if we could do more. I never want to lose the “seasons” that we are doing on the podcast, but I’d like there to be more episodes each year. I’d also love for the community to grow around us so that we could include even more voices and outlooks onto the podcast.

Also, a TV show would be pretty cool but Daniel would have to be replaced by Elijah Wood. It’s the only way it would work.

Assumptions will likely return with season 2 early next year. In the meantime, the guys will be dropping a few bonus episodes, the first of which came out recently. While you’re waiting for season 2, be sure to check out season 1!
