Writing For God Alone?

Last updated on: October 12, 2012 at 6:00 am   By Rachel Marie Stone

When I was in ninth grade, I wrote a research paper on the reclusive poet Emily Dickinson. As best as I can remember, my thesis was that Dickinson’s poetry was ‘art’ in art’s purest form because it was created entirely for its own sake: the merest fraction of Dickinson’s poems were published during her lifetime; the majority were created and known only to her and to God, and were discovered by her family after her death. But I’m not so... Read more

Go Ahead, Ban That Big Gulp

Last updated on: October 11, 2012 at 6:00 am   By Rachel Marie Stone

I’m obviously a little bit a month behind the news on this one, but, if you haven’t heard, the New York City Board of Health approved Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s ban on sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces (that’s two cups, a pint; roughly 500 mL for non-Americans.) The ban falls in line with other moves that Bloomberg has initiated, including requiring restaurants to post calorie information on menus. {I won’t lie: even though I intentionally do not count calories, there... Read more

Proverbs for Social Media

Last updated on: October 10, 2012 at 6:00 am   By Rachel Marie Stone

These days, if you want to publish a book, you pretty much have to have a blog and to use social media like Facebook and Twitter. And that’s not an entirely bad thing: in the year-plus that I’ve been writing this blog, I’ve found it to be a good thing–far more energizing than draining. While there are certainly days that I think ‘what’s next? I’m out of ideas…’ most of the time I find that writing a blog post actually... Read more

The Gospel of Personal Responsibility and Obesity

Last updated on: October 9, 2012 at 6:00 am   By Rachel Marie Stone

While I was away a few weeks ago, regular reader and fellow blogger Charity Jill tweeted to me about speaker/blogger Shane Blackshear’s post “It’s Probably Time We All Talked About Obesity and the Church”: Shane’s post is not particularly unique in its outlook; over a year ago, Marcus Thompson, a pastor in Oakland, CA, published a piece on RELEVANT called “The Immorality of Gluttony”  that expresses very similar concerns. (I responded to it here.) In the post, Shane seems to... Read more

The Best Part Of Half the Sky

Last updated on: October 8, 2012 at 6:00 am   By Rachel Marie Stone

The thing I love best about Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn’s book (and now documentary film) Half the Sky is that in it, women are shown as being the powerful solution to the challenges they face. It’s not that women are the problem, or that women face problems, it’s that women are full of potential (duh!) and can address their own problems in their own ways. Too often, international aid has focused on bringing in “solutions” dreamed up by people... Read more

Vacations! Birthdays! Viruses!

Last updated on: October 4, 2012 at 7:35 pm   By Rachel Marie Stone

I’ve been away for a bit with my family and seem to have picked up a virus along the way, which probably has nothing at all to do with all the touching of germ-ridding surfaces one does in an amusement park. Ahem. Anyway, I’m going to take a few days off from blogging to recover from my vacation. Wishing you all the best, dear readers. Read more

Q: What If We All Had the Worst Pair of Shoes?

Last updated on: October 1, 2012 at 6:00 am   By Rachel Marie Stone

A: We’d all have really messed-up and hurting feet. Today I’d like to point you to my friend Ellen’s blog for a really good post on why the idolization of people who make ‘sacrifices’ is not always appropriate, and how even progressive Christian circles sometimes marginalize members of Christ’s body who have disabilities. Ellen writes: Do our models of Christian service adequately encompass people whose bodies don’t work all that well, who live with chronic pain, who can’t even think... Read more

The Best Healthcare in the World

Last updated on: September 28, 2012 at 6:00 am   By Rachel Marie Stone

LaVonne Neff, an editor, writer, and blogger I admire, has written an excellent post on healthcare entitled “Rationing is not a four-letter word”; it was called to my attention by my good friend Ellen Painter Dollar. Ellen writes: One of LaVonne’s strengths is her ability to write about current policy debates from a faith angle, and to do so convincingly without being strident. LaVonne writes: We Americans are smart. We could find a way to provide necessary medical care for... Read more

Evangelical Patriarchy and My Eating Disorder (Part 2)

Last updated on: September 27, 2012 at 6:00 am   By Rachel Marie Stone

My husband says I forgot to point out that not only did Ruth pursue Boaz, pretty much proposing marriage to him, but she also went and lay down next to Boaz at night. When he was sleeping. After he’d been drinking. How’s that for some ‘Biblical’ Passion & Purity!? {And yes. I totally love and adore my scholarly husband for pointing that out.} Anyway, OK. Brief recap from part one– Things I learned from evangelical culture: Be Pure. And so... Read more

Evangelical Patriarchy and My Eating Disorder (part 1)

Last updated on: September 26, 2012 at 6:00 am   By Rachel Marie Stone

Disclaimers: 1. This title is, of course, hyperbole. 2. My parents didn’t teach or embody patriarchal attitudes. {Not blaming you, mom! Not blaming you, dad!} 3. I might have to add more disclaimers later. maiden with unicorn–a symbol of chastity Criticizing fairy tales for being relentlessly patriarchal is well-trod ground, I know. It’s been nearly 20 years since Ani DiFranco first sang: i am not a pretty girl that’s not what i do i ain’t no damsel in distress and... Read more
