God, unlike religious people, never explains why.

Last updated on: December 19, 2012 at 6:00 am   By Rachel Marie Stone

It feels good to be able to explain why things happen. I think that this must be a universal human impulse. We find meaning in the alignment of the celestial bodies, in the particular look of a sacrificed animal’s entrails, in the latest ‘scientific’ studies. We like to believe that we can forestall various disasters by not smoking, meditating, relaxing, going vegan, doing yoga, wearing seatbelts, buying Volvos. We like to believe that we can mold and shape our young... Read more

Look for the Helpers and Love the Children

Last updated on: December 18, 2012 at 7:07 am   By Rachel Marie Stone

There is so much to read on the recent tragic events. Here are a few of the pieces I’ve found most helpful: from Katherine Willis Pershey:   “this is how God comes to us: covered in blood and vernix, born in a barn as an impoverished peasant. And later, covered in blood and tears, killed on a cross as an ordinary criminal. This is how God comes to save us. It doesn’t make sense. It isn’t even finished; we continue... Read more

Pray and Put Up a (Nonviolent) Fight

Last updated on: December 17, 2012 at 2:00 am   By Rachel Marie Stone

It hasn’t even been six months since I quaked irrationally with fear as my husband went off with a friend to a sleepy little cinema in western Pennsylvania, weeks after the Aurora shooting. If my kids went to elementary school, I’d be quaking with fear this morning. As it is, all is not well with my soul, and I am willing to bet that a good many of my friends are giving their kids an extra squeeze before putting them... Read more

Not Everyone Has a Bedroom

Last updated on: December 12, 2012 at 7:53 am   By Rachel Marie Stone

Aidan’s reading assignment today involved a book that showed photographs of different kinds of houses from all over the world. Some I coveted (a totally Hansel and Gretel gingerbread-looking house that had a roof with grass growing on it in Germany!) and some made me go…“ooh. Grateful for what I’ve got.” And then, school assignments finished, lunch dishes washed, I went online and saw that several people had linked to this photo essay at Mother Jones, which excerpts photographer James Mollison’s... Read more

Advent and Pregnancy

Last updated on: December 11, 2012 at 6:11 am   By Rachel Marie Stone

I have a new post up at Christianity Today’s women’s blog, her.meneutics. Here is a sampling: “…we rarely remember that Advent is essentially the last month of Mary’s pregnancy—that time wherein excitement and anticipation is so great that it is separated from grief, even despair (will this baby ever come?) by a mere thread. Unlike me, unlike Kate Middleton, and, chances are, unlike you, Mary didn’t have Preggie Pops or Sea-Bands for her first trimester nausea, prenatal vitamins to stave... Read more

A Rainy Monday!

Last updated on: December 10, 2012 at 6:09 am   By Rachel Marie Stone

It’s a rainy day, AND a Monday, but, contra Karen Carpenter, that’s not getting me down because it’s the rainy season (or was, before global weirding) and rainy is how it should be. Here’s hoping your Monday, rainy or not, doesn’t get you down. Read more

Flight Behavior and Global Weirding

Last updated on: December 7, 2012 at 6:00 am   By Rachel Marie Stone

Last weekend, Graeme had a fever and so I ended up spending most of the weekend curled up on the couch with or near him as he perused Tin Tin books or watched DVDs and as I read Barbara Kingsolver’s newest novel, Flight Behavior. I’ve enjoyed Kingsolver’s work ever since I read The Bean Trees for English class in high school and then headed straight for the library to find Pigs in Heaven and Animal Dreams. One college summer afternoon... Read more

At The End of the Day, An Ox Is Still Dead

Last updated on: December 6, 2012 at 6:00 am   By Rachel Marie Stone

The New York Times reported on an incident at a college in Vermont where an ox–one of a pair of oxen–had to be euthanized after it became ill. That wasn’t the plan; the plan had been to slaughter the humanely-raised creatures and serve them in the cafeteria in keeping with the college’s mission and vision for  sustainable-farming. But animal-rights groups protested the move and pressured slaughterhouses not to participate in the plan. So at the end of the day, an... Read more

From the back of the bus to the head of the free world, in less than 60 years

Last updated on: December 4, 2012 at 6:00 am   By Rachel Marie Stone

via my dad, 57 years (almost) to the day since the beginning of the Montgomery bus boycott, this wordlessly eloquent image of the President in Rosa Parks’ seat: This image brings me close to tears. Oh, we’re not all the way there, but still: this photo reminds us of how very far we have come. As my dad says: “From the back of the bus to the head of the free world, in less than 60 years: how could anyone,... Read more
