Pope Leo’s doctors say that he is well enough to go on his planned Apostolic Journey to Latin America next month.

The doctor made this judgement two weeks after the Holy Father had the lower lobe of his right lung removed because it had a cancerous tumor in it. Further tests indicate that the cancer has not spread and the pope does not have to undergo radiation or chemotherapy.

Frankly, I am amazed. I was several years younger than Pope Leo is now when I had a double mastectomy. Two weeks out from that surgery, I was still dealing with drainage tubes. But he stood in the window at the Vatican, prays the Angelus and gives a brief homily just a few days after surgery.

Now, he’s planning a full-on Apostolic Visit to Latin America, with all the long flights, walking, standing, endless lines of people, public masses, extensive public speaking and press interviews that entails.

I think that his personal sense of mission to speak for Christ in a suffering world must be stronger than anything you or I could imagine. I also think that the Holy Spirit is sustaining him.

We should continue to pray for him, and not just because he is recovering from a serious surgery. Pope Leo is only human, and just like the rest of us humans, he needs prayer to sustain him.

From Vatican News:

“Dr. Luigi Carbone confirms that the Holy Father’s recovery after the surgery continues, and the latest medical examinations attest to his good health and favorable clinical condition,” it said. “Based on his current clinical status, as well as the instrumental and laboratory tests performed, there are no contraindications that would prevent him from undertaking his upcoming Apostolic Journey to Latin America as planned. The Pope is following medical recommendations with great care and diligence, and with a deep determination to continue serving the Church.”
