Detroit Archbishop calls Voter Suppression an Affront to God 2026-10-29T09:40:57-06:00 Rebecca Hamilton

Archbishop Edward Weisenburger
In what America Magazine called it “a sobering reminder about the importance of participating and preserving democracy.” Archbishop Edward Weisenburger of Detroit condemned government efforts to stop people from voting.
He called government voter suppression “an affront to God.”
Trump’s “justice” department has reached absurd levels in its attempt to make sure that Republicans hold congress in the upcoming election.
They’ve sent letters to election workers in blue states such as California threatening them with federal charges if they don’t comply with “justice” department demands that they refuse to allow people to vote and throw out ballots if they are suspicious the person might not be a citizen.
Election workers aren’t cops. They’re just ordinary people like you and me.
My mother was an election worker for years. Election workers are basically volunteers. Most of them are elderly women who give up their time to do this as a service to our country.
Now they’ve got Trump and his personal henchman/attorney — who the Republicans in Congress obediently confirmed as Attorney General of the United States —hitting them with vague threats of being drug up on federal charges.
This is not just an attack on these hapless election workers. It’s an attack on our right to elect who we want to govern this country.
Election workers are an example of the many quiet heroes who keep this country running. A president who cared about America wouldn’t be threatening them. He would be thanking them.
Another example of Trump’s “justice” department’s abuse of our freedom to vote is a wacko lawsuit it filed in the Alaska Senate election.
That lawsuit came right out and said that if Trump’s Republican puppet senator loses the election, the “justice” department is going to move to stop the election from being certified. On the other hand, if Trump’s puppet wins the election, the “justice” department wants the election certified.
That’s not hyperbole. Trump’s “justice” department put that in writing.
Think about it. Trump’s “justice” department is suing to overturn the senate election in Alaska before the election has even taken place.
If Trump’s puppet wins, they want the election certified. If Trump’s puppet loses, they want the votes of the people to be tossed in the trash and Trump’s puppet kept in office, whether he lost the election or not.
Trump’s henchmen over at ICE are going to be present and, I would imagine, armed at polling places that Trump fears might vote Democrat.
I’m an old woman. I’ve been voting longer than most of the people reading this have been alive. I have never once voted with an armed government thug overshadowing me before.
This is America. We don’t do things like that. Or we didn’t. But that was then. This is now. Donald Trump and his puppets are running our government now.
The Franciscan Action Network has been recruiting poll chaplains to help counteract government threats to our freedom to vote. “These poll chaplains may cast different votes, but they stand united against intimidation and for democracy,” Archbishop Weisenburger said. “That’s an example to us all … we will protect this fragile thing called democracy because it gives us our best chance at protecting one another.”
I have an absentee ballot. I need it for medical reasons. But I’m not going to use it. I’m going to the polls, no matter how hard it is for me to do it. I’m going to vote in person.
I’m an American. My family members served in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korea and Vietnam. This is my country.
I’m voting to keep the freedom that was purchased with the blood of those who went before me.
From America Magazine:
Less than two weeks out from the midterm elections, Archbishop Edward Weisenburger of Detroit offered a sobering reminder about the importance of participating in and preserving democracy.
“We’ve seen threats and acts of intimidation at voting locations. We have seen gerrymandering and voter suppression like closing polling locations in communities of color,” Archbishop Weisenburger said, addressing a group of parishioners and visitors at Gesu Catholic Church in Detroit on Oct. 21. “And while some might say, ‘Well, that’s just politics,’ I say, ‘It’s an affront to God.’”
“Just as the Catholic Church stands with immigrants, so too are we called to stand against racism and voter suppression,” Archbishop Weisenburger said.
… “What does faith have to do with elections?” Archbishop Weisenburger asked. “Pope Leo wrote in ‘Magnifica Humanitas’: ‘Faith invites us to see … we are not merely neighbors to one another, but entrusted to each other so that each of us may take responsibility, as best we can, for the lives and wounds of our brothers and sisters.’
… “Every voter should be able to fully participate as a matter of human dignity and the common good.”
