Margaret Atwood has said that she didn’t know she was writing prophecy when she penned The Handmaid’s Tale. In fact, she thought the premise of the book — that a religious nationalist dictatorship would take over the United States and reduce a subset of women to sex slaves used as human incubators — was so outlandish that it might not find an audience.

As it turns out, the book found an audience. It became a bestseller with legs that have carried it into the 21st century.

America today is government by publicly known sexual predators and pedophiles.

America today is governed by publicly known sexual predators and pedophiles. Evangelical “christians” tell any lie, twist any Scripture, to support these pedophiles, while their clergy preach misogyny as righteousness. In a country as spiritually dead as that, the Handmaid’s Tale becomes, if not an exact prophetic prediction, at least a dreadful augury.

When outlandish dystopian fantasy becomes omen, that means things aren’t too pretty in reality land where you and I have to live out our days.

The main character in the book is one of the sex slaves/incubators, who are called “Handmaids.” She finds a hidden message left in her room by the previous sex slave which is written in pseudo Latin.

Nolite te bastardes carborundorum it says.

It means, “Don’t let the bastards wear you down.”

The Handmaid’s Tale, along with George Orwell’s 1984, have become what many believe are harbingers. At the same time, the phrase Nolite te bastardes carborundorum has risen to a kind of catchphrase.

Just for precision, I should note that the actual Latin phrase, which was in common usage long before Margaret Atwood was born, is Ne tenant te spurii. It translates, basically, “Let not the bastards grind you down.” There’s another version — Noli pati a scelestis opprimi — which has the more sedate translation of “Do not let yourself be oppressed by the wicked.”

However, you translate it, whether you use pseudo Latin or real Latin, the meaning is the same.

Scripture gives us the same message repeatedly. Fret not because of evil doers. King David tells us. Do not be overcome by evil. St Paul says.

It all means the same thing.

Don’t let this evil overcome you.

Don’t allow yourself to become so overwhelmed and battered by the evil things that evil doers do that you give up and let them take over the world.

We’re living in a time when evil attacks us non-stop. It comes at us on intellectual, mental, emotional and psychological levels, all at once. We are bombarded by malicious messaging that is deliberately designed to overawe us and batter us emotionally to the point that we become numbed out, disengaged, passive and weak.

Josef Goebbels, Hitler and Tojo killed 50 million people. The primary weapon that enabled them to do it wasn’t tanks and planes. It was propaganda.

The weapons they used in World War II were toys compared to the weapons we have now.

The weapons of propaganda that are being used against us today make the ones that Goebbels employed almost 100 years ago look like toys, as well. Worse, these weapons are being aimed and fired at us all at once, all the time.

The right wing tactic: “flood the zone” with filth.

Steve Bannon is an infamous Trump operative. Trump gave Bannon a presidential pardon to protect him from prosecution for the crime of defrauding Trump’s own MAGA supporters. Bannon is another one of Trump’s buddies who turned up in the Epstein files.

Bannon — who does his podcast with a photo of the Sacred Heart positioned on camera behind him — and the billionaire Peter Thiel were plotting with Jeffrey Epstein on how they could “take down” the Vatican. They wanted to take control of the Catholic Church in much the same way Bannon, Thiel and others of their ilk actually have taken control of America’s government.

Steve Bannon, Trump operative, Epstein file alumnus, and dark government plotter extraordinaire, coined a phrase for the onslaught of trash that We the People are being subjected to.

He calls it “flood the zone.”

What flood the zone amounts to is a deliberate plot to dump a continuous tsunami of horrific and detestable crap on We the People and never let up with it. Day after day, week after week, month after month, the Trump machine keeps assaulting our ideals, our sensibilities, our morals and our ideas of what is acceptable with an unending river of sludge.

The evil of “flood the zone” can wear us down.

They do it.

Then they deny they did it. They lie flat out, and they don’t care if you know they were lying when they did it and that they are lying when they deny it.

They do it.

Then they get their whore preachers to lie about God, Jesus, the Bible and 2,000 years of Christian teaching to excuse it.

They do it.

Then they get their whores in right wing media to dump more lies on top of their lies and add more outrageous behavior, hate-filled vitriol and assaults on our morality, faith and reason to what was already coming from the White House.

They don’t even stop at night. Trump puts out one insane post after another all night long.

Then, the next day, the whole cycle of filth, lies, and disgusting behavior starts again.

Flood the zone.

They blast us with it.

Until — Illegitimi te oppresserunt — the bastards wear us down.

We just … withdraw.

We … quit.

We … give up.

They take us out of the fight and never lay a glove on us.

How do we overcome this evil?

Which brings me to the question I am going to try to help all of us — including me — find an answer to.

How do We the People stay sane and Christian when Satan is spitting in our faces every moment of every day?

This question is too important for one post. I don’t pretend to have all the answers. We are being force fed evil, all the time, without stopping. It gets to me too.

I do know three things.

This is satanic.

You and I can’t beat Satan on our own.

Jesus has already beaten Satan on Calvary.

I’m going to write about this for a while.

Because it’s real.

Because it’s terrible.

Because God put you and me here, on this earth, at this time, to play our part in putting this evil down. This is the universal vocation of all American Christians at this time. It is the call God has laid on all of us.

We are not alone. We have the Holy Spirit. We have the Eucharist. We have the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes and the Sermon on the Mount. And we have the absolute certainty of eternal life.

In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.

Note: “Fret not because of evildoers” is actually said in many ways throughout Scripture, but these explicit words are found in Psalm 37:1 and Proverbs 24:19. Close versions of these words are in other places, as well. The sentiment is throughout Scripture. “Do not be overcome by evil,” is a direct quote from Romans 12:21a. But, again, there are a number of near versions of this, and the sentiment runs throughout Scripture. “In the world you will have trouble …” is a direct quote from Jesus Christ. It is found in John 16:33b.
