You don’t have to agree with Joe Biden’s politics to feel compassion for him as he faces another tragedy in his life.

In this day and age, so many of us can recognize our own family in the tragedy of drug addiction which overtook his son Hunter. Many of us have known the suffering of watching someone we love get sucked down the hole of that raw evil.

I have watched helplessly while someone I love destroyed their life with drugs. I have had the insane conversations, pled the hopeless pleading, cried and prayed and then given up for a while only to have love of this person draw me back in to try to reason with them, talk to them and pray some more.

A family member — someone I love with all my heart — ended up with a 17-year sentence on drug charges. This person never sold drugs. This person didn’t rob anybody. This person didn’t attack or harm anyone else. But our drug laws are so harsh that they ended up sentenced to prison for a full generation of their life.

I’ve visited someone I love in prison because of drugs; been frisked, surrendered my belongings, had to change my clothing to eliminate sandals and other forbidden fashion in order to spend an hour in a room where families congregate with their prisoner loved ones.

It is a living hell to love someone who is addicted to drugs. I know, because I lived the tragedy of seeing someone I love dearly destroy their life with drugs. I know because I saw it that when a child is hurt too badly, they grow up to be a person who is easy prey to the drug-dealing, drug-pushing destruction of our modern life.

Drugs give a young person in pain what seems at the time to be a way out, a “fix” that silences the jabbering voices of painful memories and the crazy staccato of their own guilt for having survived.

President Biden is a moral and decent man who had to raise his sons alone for years after his wife and daughter were killed in a car accident. Hunter Biden was a little boy who was in the car when his mother and sister died. He suffered such grievous injuries that it was touch and go for a while if he would survive.

Joe Biden stood by his son though drug addiction and brought him back to sobriety. Anyone who has dealt with drug addiction knows what sacrificial love this was.

Now, he is watching while his son is on trial for a charge that has nothing to do with violence or harm to anyone else, but is simply a drug-related paper crime from his past. Biden says he will accept the jury’s verdict and that he will not pardon his son if he is convicted.

Whether you agree with all of President Biden’s policies, or, like me, you agree with some of his policies and not others, or if you disagree with everything he does, you can still pray for the man as he goes through this time. Watching your child go through this is a tragedy for any parent.

Joe Biden, who has suffered so much in his life — the death of his first wife and daughter and the serious injury of his two sons, the death of his oldest son from cancer, the drug addiction of his youngest son, and now this trial — needs our prayer. He deserves our compassion. And, considering the way he has hung on and hung in there through all of it to stay a decent and good man, he deserves our respect.

Don’t let politics blind you to your own basic decency and compassion for another suffering human being.

Pray for Joe Biden as he goes through this trial. You don’t have to vote for him. You can still pray for him as a fellow human being. Pray for him and for all the families and addicts who are trapped in the unendurable suffering of drug addiction.

This is hell for any parent. Pray for our president that he can endure yet another unendurable suffering and stay strong.
