Bits and Broken Pieces

It’s so great to wake up late and find that all the children are still sleeping. I have long prayed for this moment, longed for it, dreamt of it. It’s amazing to sleep through the night at all, but to sleep and then wake up to the perfect still quiet of children snoring? That is a long coveted dream.

**********************************
Yesterday we made it up to Austin to worship at Christ Church. We meant to go last year but circumstances and reality derailed us. This year we went because–well, it feels weirdly complicated.

Matt never answers his phone, as many of you know. He, like I, when the ringer goes off–well, back that up. The ringer doesn’t go off. It never goes off. His phone Never Rings. When my phone rings I involuntarily fling it across the room in a panic. So his phone didn’t ring, but the little Missed Call banner harried him, and he felt like he ought to have recognized the number, and so he called back.

And that meant that we toddled up to Austin to go to church with his old school friend, and that it happened to be the church where Brian and Tamara Murphy have been serving to the last five years, and that it was their last Sunday. If you’re looking for a lovely blog, Tamara’s will be all that you could possibly long for.
*************************

Charming and heart breaking farewell talk by Brian Murphy to the church. It seems so unkind of Jesus, I often feel, to rip apart one Christian from another, and send them in opposite directions. You just settle in and get really comfortable and then you, or someone you love, has to go off to some other task in some other place. Brian described the Beautific Vision of that moment when we will finally all be together in one place and the constant goodbyes will finally be over.

******************************
It’s so great that everyone is becoming Anglican. The Murphy’s leapt in with both feet. Their nephew in Binghamton has been lured over to Good Shepherd. Matt’s school friend and his family. It’s the obvious choice.
******************************
Matt indulged himself in a game of basketball post church, after a gorgeous lunch. He and his friend played together in fifth and sixth grade, and car pooled together every day to school. Watched them relive their youth with deep anxiety after having made a number of hysterical speeches.

“Don’t break your Achilles’ tendon! Don’t break any tendon! Or a bone! How bout maybe don’t play! If you get hurt I’m not driving you to the hospital!” I waved my arms and freaked out.

You all remember that great year? That year Matt snapped his ACL and the house flooded and we had out sixth child? What a great year that was.
************************************
Speaking of breaking things, I’ve broken my glasses. It is most tragically irritating as I cannot see beyond the end of my own nose when my contacts are out. Suppose I’ll finally have to go in for hipster frames and join the tidal wave of unhappiness.
**********************************
But not too much unhappiness because I hope today to be able to finally see Love and Friendship. It should be epic. It should be the true moment of happiness I have waited for so long. No wait, that was the children sleeping in. Well, one or the other. Or perhaps both. Have a lovely day.
