Stayed up far far too late watching election returns. Had originally forced all the children to sit and watch the ridiculous maddening coverage–In Twenty Minutes We’ll Have Breaking News Will It Be A Big Night For Republicans Or A Bearable Night For Democrates Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla–but they, surprisingly, became bored and started jumping and climbing all over me and sloshing my very very nice glass of wine. Sent them down the basement to crash around and then yelled at them to go to bed. They seemed shocked and sad, like we had all been having a good time together and they couldn’t understand why I was suddenly screaming. Once in bed they kept crashing down to ask who “won” which elicited the same response every time, “too close to call go to sleep”. Wondered, as the long night wore on, what on earth was keeping me sitting on the couch when I could be lying in bed hitting refresh on the Internet. It’s not like we watch tv. Why were we suddenly watching tv? Painted a very dark purple nearly black nail polish over my chipped nails and pondered the question. Every ten minutes we–Matt and I, yes, he was there all night in spite of saying he didn’t care at all and they were all evil and the world will go up in a ball of fire anyway so what’s the point–we said, “in five minutes we go to bed”. Needless to say, I have a pounding headache because normally I’m asleep by ten at the latest and last night I was up till nearly midnight. Stumbled downstairs this morning minutes before arrival of piano teacher and poured cornflakes into bowls. “Why are we having cornflakes again?” asked the little twerp Gladys, “We usually have something else on Wednsday.” “Yeah, well,” I snapped, “leave me alone.” And so, an hour and a half later, here I sit, wondering wether to bother to brush my teeth or not or maybe to just climb back in bed and wait for death. Have a lovely day.
