Went out to dinner last night to celebrate being married so long. Matt wore an actual tie, which was really too fancy for anywhere in this town, but charming anyway. Along the meme of Men Are Human, it Is always Matt who organizes these little excursions, who checks the money, strong arms a baby sitter, who dresses up and guilts me out of my jeans and into a dress, even though I whine and complain desperately every time. I’m not comfortable in a dress, I say. I feel stupid. I look better in jeans. Nobody cares that I have dark circles under my eyes. But he is persuasive and insisting and I end up slapping make up around and shoving myself into something weird, and we go out. I’m so grateful that I’m not the one shoving us along. If I had the energy, I wouldn’t ever find any justification for it.
Anyway, I had Chilean sea bass and Matt had a rack of lamb and we ate it all and drank a bottle of wine and considered the last few months and a variety of other topics interesting to us both. Robin Williams’ face was on the tv at the bar but being far away and not able to hear the sound over the techno music, I had no idea why.
Heavy laden with food, the second part of the evening was an indulging little trip to Wegmans. Hey, it’s Binghamton. You can have dinner, and then go to Barnes and Noble or to Wegmans. That’s what there is to do, especially if you want to be in bed by nine. We wandered up and down, assembling the weeks groceries. It’s nice, but it’s still more money then Aldi. Is it worth it for the morale booster? Maybe. Somehow I might try to fit more than two trips a year into my budget. Everything is so shiny and upscale and NPR.
Then we came home and I walked the dog…and then spent forty-five minutes depooping the dog because I forgot to cut his hair at the five and a half week mark. “That’s a serious design flaw” said Matt, to totally understate the problem. There’s nothing like enjoying a really splendid evening out and then coming home to remove an unspeakable mess from the back end of your dog. Life is pain, one might say.
So there you are. Marriage duly celebrated. Have a lovely day if you feel like it. I’ll be cleaning the house and taking a substantial amount of vitamin D because all this rain is really beyond anything.
