Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
One–I should try to be a less self focused person
I promised myself last night that I would leap out of bed this morning and run around cleaning the house because the bank will be here in a few short hours to appraise the whole property for some reason or other. Its the bank and the property so it probably has to do with money and us either giving that money to them or them giving us some because we want it? I don't know. I go to vestry sometimes but I don't always pay good attention because of the new dots game on my phone. I'm not sure if the vestry will want the appraisal value to be high or low and if the bank can't walk through all the rooms if they'll decide we don't deserve to live here….
So instead of doing what I said I was going to do, which you might have noticed is some kind of theme taking place on this blog, I took a bunch of pictures last night knowing that even though I hate it when my house is dirty, I hate cleaning it more.
Here is the first purse that I suckered Matt into getting for me. It is the Right Size.
And this is the second one which is also the Right Size.
And, since I grew up in the 80s, I also think it is sort of cool. A clever and with it teenager at church delicately rolled her eyes when I pointed out the cut of my jacket, the metalic sheen of my purse, and the fact that I could wear brown shoes without troubling myself. Apparently the youth of today do not get their noses out of joint when their shoes and their purses don't go together. NOT MATCH. I did not say match. I said Go Together.
I guess maybe I don't have enough to do. I should pray more and do more sanctified acts of mercy and worry less about my clothes and shoes. Although, I wouldn't say I Worry. I just think about it Too Much.
Two–The Lord heard my cry and I also feel a little bit like I was whining too much
You might remember I went on and on about wanting a peonie and fretting about my spiritual life. Its so important not to just have everything you want because you will eventually end up being The Wrong Kind of Person. But also, peonies are so beautiful. And so I come home from something some day this week and discovered this on my doorstep.
And I fairly wept. Also, Matt was doing the dishes which was such a gift. The two together, the Peonie and the Husband, bringing order and beauty out of loss and chaos. And to whoever put it there, THANK YOU!
Three–The Can Opener
Every time I cook for Shepherd's Bowl I make a great bleeding hole in some part of my hand trying to beat my way into the cans of tomato. The soup requires tomato but I'm not going to cut up a crate of tomato, I just want to get tomato out of a can. Here is the Medieval and Scary Can Opener of Church of the Good Shepherd and me trying to operate it.
This is what it looks like at rest. For the first four years in this church I assumed it was a bag holder. You hang your bag over it, because, well, what else could it possibly be for?
Upon closer inspection you can see the sharp and sinister point that you have to lift up and fling down onto the can at the right angle.
Making soup at church can be a terrifying experience, depending on your fortitude as a person and your ability to cope with pain and sorrow.
Four–Should the women pray and drink tea?
Our Prayer Person (not the only person who prays but the person who helps organize the prayer of the church) is tragically going away for a whole year to the sorrow and dismay of everyone. We will miss her very much but also Will The Church Continue to Pray? Its possible that everyone will totally forget this important part of the Christian Life. As part of her plans for the church while she is away, she bestowed articles related to that formal and sacred rite, Afternoon Tea, on various ones of us, believing that if we gather for that kind of moment, we might also pray. This could be true because a great amount of tea is consumed by women in the church, including me, as well as a lot of food filled with sugar and flour.
And if the people don't pray they will dry up and perish…so…when can everyone get together?
Five–Alouicious Hit a Home Run
And we all missed it because wonderful friends took him to the game so that we wouldn't be doing the whole running children all over town and swapping cars and generally engaging in the insane way of life we have so ridiculously been persuing over the last eight weeks. When he got home I said, “I thought I told you not to do that, hitting a home run when none of us where there!” Children are so disobedient.
Clever child.
Six–The inexorable march of time
This Sunday is the last Sunday of Catechesis until the Fall. Sob. Next week starts Summer Sunday School and a more relaxed time for me as I don't have to teach every Sunday and I can putter around mending things and taking inventory and tweeking lessons. I wish we could have it going on all year and during the week and everything, but rests are good for everyone.
May God start preparing children for the next year. And teachers.
Seven–Ok I'll go clean
My dog is pressing himself against me in an irritated and pointed way. The sun is high up and we appear to wasting our lives.
Have a great weekend and go check out Jen! (If you want to. Have a great weekend if you want to. I would never presume to tell you what kind of weekend to have. If you want to have a miserable weekend that's perfectly fine. BUT if you live in Bing and you don't come to the Health Fair and Ice Cream Social tomorrow from 12 to 3 God will probably do something terrible to you. Or Carmen will, and that could be worse. See you there!)
