“I hear the sound of a mighty rushing wind, it’s closer now than it has ever been.” Midnight Cry
Have you ever wondered what would happen if the sun refused to rise? Not just a moment, but for many days? What if the sky turned black in the middle of the day? In the book of Amos, it was prophesied that God will make the sun go down at noon, He will darken the Earth in broad daylight; He will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentation. Could that really happen these days? Before we delve into this musing, I’d like to share that I am not a Biblical cessationist. Those who are believe that miracles, signs and wonders and other aspects of the Scripture ended when the Apostles died. I am a continuationist who believes that the gifts (prophesy, healing, the Gifts of the Spirit) are still for today and that the Bible is a living and active book that can and does apply to the days we live in. Think about it for just a moment, the Scripture tells us that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. If that is so, He has not changed His mind concerning the Scripture, He never lies. We in our humanity and he who kills, steals and destroys foists that lie on the church.
Is this a Biblical warning to humanity?
The prophet Joel also mentioned the Great and Terrible day of the Lord. The sun will turn dark, the moon will turn into blood and the people will cry out in fear. This is not just about physical darkness but also spiritual darkness, God wanted the earth to feel the weight of their rebellion. This also happened in Egypt with the 10 plagues when God delivered the Israelites from slavery. Finally, it happened on Calvary, when Jesus died for our sins, the earth grew dark and earthquakes filled the land. Church, the Scripture doesn’t say if this happens again, it will happen again. Amos 5:18 tells us: “Woe unto you that desires the day of the Lord. To what end is it for you?” The day of the Lord is darkness and not light. Dear ones, the day of the Lord is coming, are you prepared?

Signs are stirring in the Heavens and on Earth
How many times have you heard of flooding recently? Snow on the beach? Many volcanoes are erupting all over the world, various strong earthquakes have happened and of course the terrible event that happened in Nepal. Something is stirring most definitely, Creation is trembling, the geopolitical position of many countries is shaking mightily and France is on fire. That is just a few things happening around the world at the moment. Will you be ready when the day comes? Are your lamps trimmed and burning? This is a time that we must search our souls, go before God and dwell in His secret place of the Most High. I hope that you will stay with me to discuss the meaning of the great and terrible day.
God has always operated in patterns
A while back, I wrote an article concerning history repeating itself over and over. We just have more technology and think that we are more sophisticated. The people rebel terribly in society, sin becomes rampant, the line between THE Truth and “My truth” often denies reality. Brain rot and selfishness is a cornerstone of our society. We can’t go a day without hearing about violence in our world. People have no direction, they have turned to the false gods of old. All of these historical settings in the Bible give us a blueprint of how God moves on the Earth. God in His mercy always sends His watchmen on the wall to warn, to ask people to repent before judgement falls. It repeats itself over and over. Before deliverance comes, the darkness falls.

Egypt is a good example
The clearest revelation of this divine pattern is found in Exodus. When the children of Israel were enslaved by the Egyptians for four centuries. God in His goodness brought Moses (a deeply flawed man) to deliver the people from their hardship. As the Pharaoh continued to resist God Almighty’s charge to let His people go, the plagues escalated. During the ninth plague God had Moses to stretch out his hand toward Heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt. This was not an eclipse, it was a supernatural smothering, a palpable suffocating darkness that blanketed the land for 3 days. Yet, Israel in the land of Goshen had light in their dwellings. This was not an arbitrary move of God, it was a prophetic threshold. The darkness came before the final judgement, the death of the firstborn of all Egypt. The Israelites painted their doors with lamb’s blood as the Angel of Death passed through the land.
Idolatry was rampant
The blackout came to a country that had many idols, one of which was the sun god Ra. Their god did not help them in this situation. This was not just judgement of Egypt, it was a sign to all future generations that when God prepares to act with power, the world may first be plunged into divine darkness. Think about our society today, we are truly in crisis. Now there are believers out there that love the Lord and want to serve Him. They are the Ekklesia, or the Remnant, the set apart ones. In every move of God, there is a group that understands that God abhors sin and His divine nature must deal with it. But culture as a whole? Wow. How many times have you seen massive entitlement, amoral people believing that the rules don’t apply to them? Of course, there is the dumpster fire of social media that is ruining people’s lives. We’ve made it like a god to us, we can doom scroll for hours but we can’t make time for God. I am going to step on some toes with this one but I did discuss the ancient god Moloch in a prior article who accepted babies as sacrifice. We are doing the same thing here, there have been over 64 million abortions since 1973. Dear ones, the blood of the innocent cries out to Father God.
The prophetic words were not limited to the past
These prophetic words are not limited to the past. The Word of God tells us it will happen again. Joel 2:30 says: “And I will show wonders in the heavens and the earth, blood and fire and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into blood before the great and terrible day of the Lord.” These are not just poetic metaphors, they are prophetic countdowns. The Apostle Peter quoted Joel’s prophecy in Acts, he knew by divine revelation that this judgment would come again. All of this begs the question, are you like the wise virgins that Jesus mentioned in Matthew 25 or the foolish ones? Are you ready when midnight strikes and the bridegroom comes to take you to the marriage? Darkness is a signal to awaken. It divides, humbles and makes you prepare. Jesus is calling, He’s showing signs everywhere, will you listen?

Let the Scripture be your guide
From the foundations of the earth to the final moments of prophetic fulfillment, the Holy Scriptures reveal a stunning pattern. When the patience of God runs long and His warnings go unheeded, He speaks not just with words, but with creation itself. Darkness is a spiritual consequence for rebellion. We must do as Isaiah 5 tells us: “Woe unto them that call evil good and good evil, that put darkness for light and light for darkness. And if one look unto the land, behold darkness and sorrow and the light is darkened in the heavens thereof.” We are in a generation of inverted moral standards. Truth is intolerant to a lot of people. Male and Female are backwards, spiritual blindness has taken root. Father is speaking, He is giving warnings like never before. From Genesis to Revelation the heavens have served as the divine scroll of God, unfolding His messages, His warnings, His judgement and His promises in the language of light and movement.

He beckons you with His love and grace
It’s time to examine our hearts, cry out to God, and run to Him. Church! It’s time to be bold. When we do not stand up for Jesus, another moral system weasels its way in and people are left with selfishness and he who kills, steals and destroys celebrates his corruption of God’s creation. He loves you, He wants you to come to Him, I am reminded of the old hymn, Grace Grace God’s grace, grace that will pardon and cleanse within. Marvelous grace of our loving Lord, grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt. He poured out His love for you on the cross. Will you listen before the great and terrible day comes? I ask you to prayerfully consider these words, Father God has put them on my mind all day long. Honestly, I didn’t want to write this article, but I want to be bold for Him. I submit these words to you all, dear ones, with fear and trembling of Him who sits on the throne. Selah
