The 11th Commandment is ‘Thou Shalt Be Nice,’ and we don’t believe the other Ten. Voddie Baucham
Why do we often hear of many people questioning their gender identity? It almost seems as if it is a social contagion. Don’t like who you are? Change your gender! While I believe that there are some that truly struggle with their identity, it seems as if a struggle that impacted a very small portion of society has now taken over. People are fighting about biological men in women’s sports and biological men in women’s spaces. Did those strong women of the past who marched for women’s rights march in vain? Does the patriarchy indeed strike again, and win? I believe that once again, this is an age old struggle that has existed for millennia. He who kills, steals, and destroys strikes again.
Questioning identity has existed for quite a while
Did you know that in ancient times, the goddess Ishtar was known for having priests that dressed and acted as women? She was known to change a man into a woman and a woman into a man. Gender fluidity was her specialty, eunuchs surrounded her and she indeed had a cult following. Much like King Solomon lamented so long ago, there is indeed nothing new under the sun. It should also be noted that women who were part of the gala (priests who sang laments to Ishtar) were seemingly replaced by men who believed they were women as more joined the cult. We think we are so very evolved in our humanity, when in all actuality, we are living in new days with old demons.

God loves you very much
First, dear reader I want to tell you that God, the creator of the universe loves you with an unfailing love. You are important, who you are is important to Him who sits on the throne. I don’t mean to demean your identity or cause you to doubt your worth. You are worthy, Jesus Christ made you worthy. However, how like the enemy to cause you to doubt your identity. What I am about to write is controversial, you don’t have to agree with me, but I do ask for you to read it prayerfully and with an open heart.
In the beginning God
If we journey back to the book of Genesis, we see that in the beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth. The Holy Spirit was awaiting His command by brooding over the waters, and Jesus, the Word was there to perform it. In that act of creation, God made our absolutely breathtaking earth. After that, He created our animals, and finally, He created Adam and eventually Eve. Why? He said that Man should not be alone. He created an equal yet different partner in Eve. She was bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh. In the New Testament, Jesus repeated this account to His disciples, that is how important God’s design was to Him. In the Hebrew, Adam is ādām it means earth or mankind. Eve is translated Εὔα which means mother of all living. Each name states an intended purpose from our great Creator.

The first question of identity happened in the garden
Imagine this, you were in Heaven, with every precious stone covering your body. Your pipes and timbrels were perfect in their pitch, your beauty was unmatched and you sat in the glorious presence of God. Then one day you became prideful and were cast from Heaven and all of its beauty. After that, Hashem decided to make a beautiful creation, with new companions to walk with in the cool of the day. In your pride, would you seek to cause the Father’s new companions to doubt their identity? That is exactly what Satan did when he presented the fruit to Eve. His words were, “Has God really said?” That is his job, to question what God has said about you, who you are, what you represent, how you should live. He is crafty and cunning and wants you to not fulfill God’s destiny for your life.
Who am I in God?
- We are created in the likeness of God. The book of Genesis tells us that God, Hashem, Yahweh created us male and female. If he knows the very hairs on your head, why would He even make a mistake about who you are?
- You were loved before the foundation of the World. There have been times when I’ve struggled about my understanding of God Almighty, He exists out of space and time. He knew that we would stray as a people yet He still created us, He had a plan. He sent Jesus, His only begotten Son so that we could spend eternity with Him if we choose to follow Him. Again, how could He make a mistake?
- We must Crucify our flesh daily. The Apostle Paul told us I have been crucified with Christ [that is, in Him I have shared His crucifixion]; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body I live by faith [by adhering to, relying on, and completely trusting] in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me. Our flesh (our enemy of old) will lie to us and tell us that God made a mistake in our gender, that is his purpose. Say these words out loud daily! Paul had struggles, he talked about his thorn in the flesh, yet he persevered on through the power of the Cross.

The work of the Gospel Brings Deliverance
- You have been delivered from the kingdom of darkness by His glorious light. Those doubts that Satan sows? Jesus took them on when He hung on the cross. Col. 1:13
- You are blessed with all spiritual blessings. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. Ephesians 1:13
- You are no longer condemned and free from the law of sin and death. Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh,] God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. Romans 8:1-2
- You are more than a conqueror. Jesus made us more than conquerors through His sacrifice. What does it mean to conquer? To successfully overcome a hard challenge or fear. He’s given us the ability to know who we are in Him and not doubt it. Romans 8:37
- You are healed and whole. I Peter 2:24 tells us: “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” Jesus took away the doubt of our identity when He hung on the cross. It’s hard to fathom, but every single worry, care, identity doubt, hurt, sickness was bore on the cross for every person that has lived or will live. I can’t imagine the pain and agony of that sacrifice. No wonder Jesus asked God why He had forsaken Him on the cross! That is such weight to bear.
- You reign in life by Christ Jesus. Romans 5:17 lays it out for us, when Adam and Eve brought us death and doubt, Jesus brought us life. For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!
- You are complete in Him! Colossians 2:9-10:For in Him all the fullness of Deity (the Godhead) dwells in bodily form [completely expressing the divine essence of God]. And in Him you have been made complete [achieving spiritual stature through Christ], and He is the head over all rule and authority [of every angelic and earthly power]. Any doubt that you have about who you are was obliterated by Jesus on the Cross. We’ve been made complete in Him, we’ve just got to accept it, walk in it and let the Gospel do its divine work in our lives.
We all have our thorns in the flesh
Beloved, I write all of this not to shame anyone who is struggling with who they are. I will accept you with love, and in that love I will give you the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For so many years the church has stopped believing in the power of the Word. It’s not passed since Jesus left the earth and the time of the disciples. God’s Word is a living and active document that is applicable for today. How like the enemy to cause the Scripture to just be words on a page. God’s Word is sharper than any two edged sword! Start declaring who you are in Christ Jesus.

Let the Gospel do its work
Finally, I’d like to put forth this idea. God, the creator of the universe who sent His very own son put you in the wrong body? If He knew you before you were in your mother’s womb, why would he put that struggle in your life? Who questioned Jesus’ identity when He came to the earth? It was not God. It was Satan. “If you are the Son of God.” It seems to me that he who comes to steal, kill and destroy asks the destructive questions. Yes, even Satan questioned Jesus’ identity. That’s how ridiculous he and his minions are. Dear ones and dear church, let’s start walking in the power and authority God has given us in His Word. Let’s love everyone into the fold, let’s give them the Gospel which frees us from sin and let’s stop being passive and start being active. You are all precious in His sight. Selah.
