“We are given to the cult of personality; when things go badly we look to some messiah to save us. If by chance we think we have found one, it will not be long before we destroy him.” Konstantinos Karamanlis
This week there was a rather tense hearing in the Senate concerning Dr. Fauci and the Coronavirus. I had the misfortune of listening to the meeting in its entirety. Most of the time when I watch these meetings, I think about a Broadway show; however, the instruments are out of tune, the singers are way off-key, and no one can count. That was this meeting from start to finish. It’s so ridiculous that those from both sides of the aisle were seeking their “viral moment” that will be enshrined in a clip that will cause them to have millions of views. It’s just gross. What happened to a passion for finding the truth and accountability? Well, dear ones, I think it was tossed out with yesterday’s trash.

The Virus Years Were Like a Fever Dream
This article is not to doubt that the virus existed and was terrible. Personally, I had to be vaccinated for my job (I work with the elderly). I begrudgingly did so. With the 2 vaccinations I received, I still contracted the virus 5 times. Yes, 5. In the midst of the pandemic, I decided to go and see my family in NYC. I followed all the protocols for filling out forms, agreed to quarantine for 14 days, and also received notice that I would receive a weekly call from a member of the New York State Health Department. I was told to monitor my symptoms and let them know if I was sick. That week I jumped on a plane with about 8 people in total. When I arrived at La Guardia, I was told I would be met by a member of the National Guard to check my “papers”. I exited the plane rather fast; it was so amazing. I looked at the very empty airport and.. Nothing. No National Guard troops, no one to meet me. As I walked to ground transport, the uninterested desk attendant didn’t even look up when I asked her if she needed my forms. She just said, “No”. I was confused. Throughout my 21-day stay, I received no calls, no check-ins, nothing. It was all just political theater. I was disgusted.
How Did We Get Into This Mess?
Fast forward back to when all of this started, a new and daunting virus plagued the world, schools were shut down, churches were closed tight, and children were left to rot their brains. I had 3 children graduate online; we picked up their diplomas in a drop-off line with masks on. Many folks were forced to leave their loved ones at the door of the hospital only to find out that their precious one died alone with no family to comfort them. Let’s face it, that was unfair and awful. One man stood in the fray to save the day, or so we thought. He said that the science was changing (in most cases, it does); he said that if you get vaxxed, you won’t get the bug. Well, we did. I could make a laundry list of grievances of both myself and my music friends who lost their jobs during that time. We looked at this man as if he was the savior himself. That was our mistake, dear ones. No one is a savior, no president, no doctor, no politician. Only Jesus Christ.
A Variety of Emotions are Understandable
Anger is understandable and guilt. After all, the church should have stood tall and continued to meet. We suffered as a body because we bowed to the savior of the zeitgeist. Prayer meetings should have been held in earnest; we should have cried out to God and asked Him to deliver us, yet we didn’t. I worked with senior citizens several times during the virus; I understood the need to shield them. However, the loneliness they felt was palpable. They “sneaked” secret card games just to battle the utter dejection. I didn’t blame them at all. You may ask, “Well, it happened, we can’t change it, what can we do now?”

Be The Church!
For so long, we’ve heard people shout from the rafters, “Separation of Church and State!” I agree in principle; we should not have a national religion by any means, but when does that mean that we elect people with no morals and egomaniacal tendencies? Alexander Hamilton once said, “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.” In our quest to separate church and state, we’ve elected people who stand for literally nothing but themselves. What happened to accountability of words and character? I’ll tell you, we’ve started to tiptoe around and call it “their truth.” That’s not a church that stands on the rock that is Jesus Christ. I say this with love and to myself as well. Stand up, Church! Look to Jesus the Author and Finisher of our faith! You’ve become scared, tired and weak, rather than leaders! Elect those who stand for something, rather than nothing.
I want to share a few Scriptural principles with you to lean upon, actually stand upon with power and belief in our God, who is an Awesome and all-powerful God.
- Look to Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our Faith. When we don’t have a savior, we start looking for one. That is why a lot of people saw a man as a savior, rather than God. I’m not saying stop going to a doctor at all, but rather pray and look through the lens of Jesus. If it smells fishy or narcissistic, if there is no room for questioning without being labeled a heretic, run away. Run to Jesus.
- Crucify your flesh, daily. I have been crucified with Christ [in Him I have shared His crucifixion]; it is no longer I who live, but Christ (the Messiah) lives in me; and the life I now live in the body I live by faith in (by adherence to and reliance on and complete trust in) the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself up for me. What way does our flesh lead us? Selfishness, fear, and “my truth.”
- Don’t give in to fear. Paul said in I Timothy 2: For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. You might be thinking the world is too crazy to not experience fear! You would be right; that is why a firm foundation and relationship with God is tantamount. Pray this Scripture out loud; the Word tells us to hold fast our confession of Faith. How do we do that? Speak the Word! Out loud! As many times as needed.
- Seek God’s Peace. Paul had some wise words for us in Philippians: Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
- Worship God daily. What has given many a warrior strength in the Bible? Worship. David worshiped God when he was celebrating huge highs and punishing lows. Worship brings us in communion with God. Sing a hymn, find a song that speaks to your heart. When David was running from harm, he wrote the words: You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. On my public Facebook page, I go live several times a week with worship songs. Feel free to tune in.
- Pray each and every day. In Psalm 5:3, David daily made his requests to God. I often do a 20-minute prayer walk. No headphones, nothing, just me and a talk with Father God. If you don’t know what to pray, the Scripture tells us the Holy Spirit will help us in our weakness.

What Lessons Can We Learn From This Kafuffle?
COVID was real, and many died. In some cases, the vaccine did help people. The problem was hero worship, narcissism, prayerlessness, pride and misinformation. Ask questions, dear ones, particularly when there is a cult of personality involved. Doctors are human and fallible. Perhaps those in leadership did get caught up in the notoriety of so many people looking to them for answers. But as history has told us over and over, those who put faith in themselves and their imminent knowledge will indubitably fall, and in some cases fall hard. Touch some grass, dear ones, pray for our leaders, and be the Church! Selah.
