Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

“You know, if I look out the window and see locusts, frogs and fire falling from the sky, I’ll probably think, Oh, it’s just Monday. The world is getting crazier by the day.” Me-Yesterday.
In the last few days, the government has started to release the UFO files. In those files, you can see some flying objects do some unexplainable feats of flying. Some objects look as if they are coming straight out of the water, defying the senses. All these files begs the question, are we alone in the universe? I want to take a few moments and try to disseminate these questions from a Biblical perspective. In the words of Paul the Apostle, “We see through a glass darkly.” One day, we will know the whole picture.
There truly is nothing new under the sun
In times past, ancient civilizations speculated about life in other places. Some were in the form of the Greek gods, Zeus with his bolts of furious lightning, Hades and his domain of hell, Atlantis and its vast and technologically advanced society. In Biblical times, the sky was worshiped, and the prophets of Ba’al called to heaven for their god to send fire to light their altar. As we move to more modern times, we have the very familiar phrase, “Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds; to seek out new life and new civilizations; to boldly go where no man has gone before!” We have Thor, Superman, The Avengers, I could go on and on. To sum it up, humanity has always been asking the question, “Is there Hashem, the God of the Universe? Or, are there aliens with advanced technology that are trying to make contact?”

Paul told us that we do not wrestle against flesh and blood
For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12. Let’s take a moment and look at some commentary for this verse.
- We are not fighting against flesh and blood enemies. The word used for flesh and blood in the Greek is: haima the phrase signifies man or human beings. Our battle is not with people.
- We are fighting against evil spirits in the heavenly places (the unseen world). Matthew Henry’s Commentary tells us: considering what sort of enemies we have to deal with—the devil and all the powers of darkness: For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, etc. The combat for which we are to be prepared is not against ordinary human enemies, not barely against men compounded of flesh and blood, nor against our own corrupt natures singly considered, but against the several ranks of devils, who have a government which they exercise in this world. We have to do with a subtle enemy, an enemy who uses wiles and stratagems to get his way in you and in the earth.
- The devil is a spirit, a wicked spirit; and our danger is the greater from our enemies because they are unseen, and assault us ere we are aware of them. The devils are wicked spirits, and they chiefly annoy the saints with, and provoke them to, spiritual wickednesses, pride, envy, malice, etc. These enemies are said to be in high places, or in heavenly places, so the word is, taking heaven (as one says) for the whole expansum, or spreading out of the air between the earth and the stars, the air being the place from which the devils assault us. Or the meaning may be, “We wrestle about heavenly places or heavenly things;” so some of the ancients interpret it.

Some are turning to the book of Enoch
Disclaimer, I’ve never read the book of Enoch (the grandfather of Noah) until recently. I do not consider it as a part of the Biblical canon. Enoch falls into the category of historical commentary of the time. Much like Josephus, the writing adds context and understanding to the Scripture. Enoch had some explanations for the “Spiritual forces in high places.” In the book of Jude, Enoch is actually quoted. For the sake of time, I am going to stick to the Book of the Watchers. Who were the Watchers?
- The Watchers were fallen angels who descended to the earth and married human women. They had children with the women, which resulted in the Nephilim. The Nephilim were mentioned twice in the Scripture. The Watchers asked Enoch to implore God for forgiveness, but they were denied and were bound to the earth.
What were the sins of the Watchers and Nephilim
- The Watchers and Nephilim taught humans forbidden knowledge and crafts which led to warfare, sorcery and other sins. The Nephilim caused much havoc on the earth, they even ate humans as food. When the depth of their depravity was realized, the Watchers asked Enoch to implore God to forgive them. Their request was denied. God determined that the Nephilim had to be wiped out. The book of Genesis talked about this need for decimation of this evil in the form of the flood. Also included in this book were the functions of the Archangels, demon worship, sirens, interdimensional beings, fallen angels and disembodied spirits. It sounds like a science fiction novel, doesn’t it?
If Satan is the prince of the air, could he be behind these strange anomalies? | Image Courtesy of Canva Pro.
Satan is the prince of the power of the air
Additionally, in Ephesians 2:2 Satan is referred to as the “Prince of the power of the air.” What does that mean? The air signifies the atmosphere; this word is also used in I Thessalonians when it says that we shall be caught in the clouds to meet God in the air. If Satan is the prince of the air, could he be behind these strange anomalies? Dear ones, I do not have the answers; I only have God’s Word and prayer to cleave to in these confusing times. There is one idea that I can certainly cleave to: we are indeed living in the times of Noah again; history has indeed repeated itself. Evil is good, my truth is the only truth, violence abounds. Now is the time to seek God in prayer as more is released to the public.
Christ gives us hope in confusing times
Finally, even though our battle is not against flesh and blood, we do have the Armor of God to lead us through these confusing times. As life becomes more like a science fiction movie, cleave more to God’s Word and let not your heart be troubled. Find your rest in God’s peace, which passes all understanding. Selah
