“We are stuck in a generation where loyalty is just a tattoo, love is a quote and lying is the new truth.”~ Unknown

Yesterday I was listening to Alistair Begg put forth an interesting argument. He put forth that the current generation has been born on 3 great lies. They are:

Do You Agree With His Viewpoint?

Begg used Ephesians 6 and 2 Timothy 4 to bring forth his point. 2 Timothy 4 tells us: Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.  But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry. We must let the Spirit do His Work through the Word by teaching the whole truth of God.

Sermons Have Changed Over Time

Think about it, if you are a regular church participant or you listen online, what is the subject of many of the sermons that you hear? I’m not talking about preaching and screaming hellfire and brimstone, but what sermons really teach the full counsel of God? The message of God’s love is absolutely wonderful and unending. God did so love the world that He gave His only son for our sins. He was the payment for our inevitable human nature that spirals to darkness. He brought us the light of salvation; in that light and movement of faith on our part, we must move towards the way, the truth, and the life. What is that truth? Jesus made that very clear. Jesus said to him, “]I am the [only] Way [to God] and the [real] Truth and the [real] Life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. There is only one truth, dear ones, it is Jesus Himself. Your truth leads you in one direction- to narcissism and ultimately deceit. The heart is deceitful above all things, the prophet Jeremiah told us so.

The Sunday School Generation Has Been Lost Along With a Belief in the Creator

In these days of deconstruction of many believers who grew up in a faith tradition, one vital cornerstone of development was tossed away like yesterday’s trash. Sunday School. How like the enemy to make sure that a class that provides the building blocks of faith becomes less popular. In those little classes where we made spaghetti art, we also learned that in the beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth. We learned to love our neighbor, we learned basic morality and Judeo-Christian values. Morality was cherished and taught. I’m not saying that there were no problems that existed in that sphere, but rather, there was more good than harm to put forth basic Bible tenets of life.

God calls us to be humble

The Baby Was Thrown Out With the Bathwater

In our haste to throw out some structural foundations of a moral life, we lost the will to pursue the Scripture and all of its merits. The basic message each Sunday morning has been reduced to a cliche. God loves you very much, so much that He respects “your truth” rather than running with abandon to the Truth of Jesus. When the Word is not rightly divided, what happens? If the whole counsel of the Word is suppressed, these things ensue: Idolatry (narcissism, hence the me, myself, and I culture). Immorality and the destruction of culture.

What is Idolatry?

When you think of idols, you probably think of those old statues of gods from history, and indeed some people still worship those gods. Colossians 3:5-6 tells us to put to death what is earthly within you. The activity of the human heart that craves anything more than God. This could be self-centeredness, sexual impurity, pornography, greed, your phone (too much time on the phone but no time for God). You are exchanging the truth of God for a lie, and as such, you worship the creature (comforts and sin) more than God. I would add if you align yourself with vile podcasters who sow division and vitriol, that is a path to idolatry. Dear ones, I’ve been guilty of these things myself. God, in His lovingkindness, desires for us to follow Him first.

When We Pursue the Pull of the Flesh, We Invite the Wrath of God

I used to think that the wrath of God was a lightning bolt that would rain down from the sky, or I would lose something that I dearly loved or wanted. I was wrong. The wrath of God is the settled response of the entire holiness and character of God to everything that He knows that is marring and spoiling, disappointing and destroying life. Jesus said that He came to give us life and life abundantly. How do we get there in this crazy world? Look to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. Over the last days and weeks I’ve talked to many Christians who sense that we are on a precipice as a people. They also sense that God is about to do something that He has not done in quite some time, a great awakening, an awe inspiring event that will strike Holy fear into the world. Perhaps a Great and Terrible day that Joel 2 talks about, only God Almighty knows. Either way, we can sense with everything that is going on, we must pursue His holiness in our lives.

Now is Not the Time for Carpe Diem

Finally, dear ones, we’re not living in The Dead Poets Society, we are not screaming “Carpe Diem!” each and every day. There is a world that is more real than hours, the spirit world where eternity lies. The scripture tells us that the spiritual world is, in fact, very real. The Apostle Paul told us: For our struggle is not against flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this [present] darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) places.

Stand Firmly in His Peace

Dear ones, it’s time to stand in the fullness of the Word of God; gone are the days when we could practice cotton candy Christianity. We can’t pick and choose what suits our fancy anymore; let us prayerfully examine our walk with Him and pursue His Word. After all, His love for us is so very fierce. He desires to give us a life of contentment in His Glory and Grace. Selah.
