Push – to gift or not?

Last updated on: July 29, 2008 at 3:33 pm   By Pia de Solenni

Recently I was interviewed for this piece in the Washington Times on the topic of push presents. My original comment is posted here. In a nutshell, I think they’re a lovely tradition that has been hi-jacked.’ Read more

I owe somebody some Botox…

Last updated on: July 29, 2008 at 3:24 pm   By Pia de Solenni

‘I got married not so long ago, but it seems like I missed out on the latest trend: Botox for your bridesmaids. Just when you thought that wedding hype and the accompanying multi billion dollar industry couldn’t get any bigger….it did. For a laugh, check out the latest spin for selling Botox and assorted cosmetic procedures. I say laugh because you’ll cry otherwise. (Thank goodness I only had one witness/matron of honor. Can’t imagine owing botox to a whole troop... Read more

Challenging the NAACP

Last updated on: July 29, 2008 at 3:15 pm   By Pia de Solenni

‘Blacks make up about 13 percent of the US population, but they account for about a third of all abortions. Clearly, there are some discrepancies here.’,’ Bill McGurn of the Wall Street Journal puts these numbers in the context of efforts that the NAACP could support in order to help the black community, especially women. Read the whole piece , but this part puts the case pretty clearly: On the other side, of course, are the maternity homes and Crisis... Read more

Moving back toward the fold

Last updated on: July 29, 2008 at 3:05 pm   By Pia de Solenni

This recent article by Paul Kengor suggests that the Methodist Church might be coming back, closer to the fold. While Kengor is commenting on Hillary Clinton’s relationship to the Methodist Church, I find it interesting that there are some very substantial shifts in the platform that the United Methodist Church has embraced for many years. Take a look: Among the steps taken was a statement encouraging the church to “assist the ministry of crisis pregnancy centers and pregnancy resource centers... Read more

Frozen better than fresh

Last updated on: July 21, 2008 at 5:38 pm   By Pia de Solenni

Clearly, we’re not talking about food. We’re talking about human embryos. Well, some people are. So there’s a report of a new study that claims that babies born from frozen embryos are healthier than those born from fresh embryos. In either case, we’re talking about IVF. But an interesting bit of information is volunteered by one of the experts: Dr Anja Pinborg, from the Copenhagen University Hospital Rigshospitalet, who led the study, said: “Most encouragingly, we found no increased risk... Read more

It’s all moms fault

Last updated on: July 21, 2008 at 5:23 pm   By Pia de Solenni

Here’s a new twist on demographic issues. Russell Shorto, an experienced and well published author, takes a look at the demographic crisis facing much of Europe and comes to the conclusion that it’s all because of stay-at-home moms.’,’He makes the case that countries that offer more support for working mothers, like Sweden, have a higher birthrate because women can work and have children. He gives Italy as an example of a country where stay-at-home moms have fewer children than working... Read more

The Myths Of Feminism…again

Last updated on: July 21, 2008 at 4:30 pm   By Pia de Solenni

Yet again, a story of the failings of feminism. This time, it’s told by the daughter of feminist icon Alice Walker.’,’ Rebecca Walker tells her story here which is also a story of the failings of feminism. Not surprising, it includes her own abortion experience. Read here. (Tip from Michelle Malkin and Kathryn Lopez on their respective websites.) How generous of China….

Last updated on: June 4, 2008 at 5:48 pm   By Pia de Solenni

‘The recent earthquake in China has prompted some unexpected “generosity” on the part of the Chinese government….’,’ China, widely known for it’s one-child policy which translates into forced abortion and forced sterilizations, appears to be making some concessions. The government is lifting its one-child policy for parents who lost a child in the earthquake. The committee announced Monday that if a couple’s legally born child was killed in the earthquake, an illegal child under 18 years could be registered as... Read more

Sex & The City

Last updated on: May 29, 2008 at 7:13 am   By Pia de Solenni

With all the buzz about the new Sex and the City movie, it’s important to keep things in perspective… The HBO series created a culture of its own. I recall being on airplanes and overhearing women who were trying to make it home in time to watch SATC with their friends. A recent survey indicates just how much the series influenced women and the culture at large. While I don’t endorse the lifestyle proposed by the show, I can think... Read more

Prominent Catholic Pols & Communion

Last updated on: May 1, 2008 at 6:04 am   By Pia de Solenni

[Archbishop Naumann weighs in and reminds Gov. Sebelius of her responsibilities as a Catholic pol. Novak’s column here.] [Another addition – Archbishop Wuerl’s response.] [In addition to the sources below, Sandor Magister, an Italian journalist published this piece which includes the famous letter of Cardinal Ratzinger to the US Bishops.] Yet, again, the question arises concerning prominent Catholic politicians who are publicly at odds with the teachings of the Catholic Church and who approach to receive Holy Communion. Bob Novak... Read more
