VP Biden “Understands” China’s One-Child Policy

Last updated on: August 22, 2011 at 2:18 pm   By Pia de Solenni

The Vice President is on a tour in China. In a speech yesterday at a Chinese university, he said that he “understands” and is not “second-guessing” China’s one-child policy. Read more here. Read more

When Consumerism And Motherhood Collide

Last updated on: August 19, 2011 at 9:37 am   By Pia de Solenni

It’s a brave new world. We’re so far down the slippery slope, we don’t remember when we started sliding. Seriously. Now, the right to choose means that women can not only choose the sex and even some of the genetic traits of their infant, but it also means that they can dispose of their “products” at will. Sounds like ancient Rome to me, only this time it’s the women with the power, not the men. Read more here. Read more

“Meet The Press” David Gregory: Religion Shouldn’t Be More Than A Warm Fuzzy Feeling

Last updated on: August 15, 2011 at 12:31 pm   By Pia de Solenni

Before my husband and I left for church yesterday, we happened to catch part of David Gregory’s interview of Rep. Michele Bachmann on “Meet The Press.” I started paying attention to the program when Gregory asked her about her faith. (You can click on the image above for the video. The complete transcript is here.) The nature of my work sometimes gives me the sense that we’re headed down the slippery slope, about 150 miles an hour. Gregory’s questioning... Read more

Welcome to iChurch: the Church of What’s Happening Now.

Last updated on: August 5, 2011 at 12:18 pm   By Pia de Solenni

So it turns out that the term iChurch has already been appropriated for a website that helps you unblock your iPhone. I had no idea. But I think it also works well to describe the religions or churches that we Catholics create for ourselves when we neglect to actively inform ourselves about our faith. Read more here. NFP: Throwing Down The Gauntlet

Last updated on: July 28, 2011 at 2:32 pm   By Pia de Solenni

NFP Awareness Week, not unlike NFP (natural family planning) is one of the Catholic Church’s best kept secrets. Memo to Dan Brown: I think you could come up with a great story here. This might be bigger than your tired Da Vinci Code. Several years ago, I was asked to do a radio interview about NFP Awareness Week at the end of July. I hadn’t even heard of it. I was convinced that the host of the show was wrong... Read more

Mandatory Contraception Coverage

Last updated on: July 21, 2011 at 8:07 am   By Pia de Solenni

The Institute of Medicine and the Department of Health and Human Services are proposing mandating coverage of FDA approved contraception and sterilization by private insurance companies nationwide. Cardinal DiNardo, chair of the US Bishops Pro-Life Committee, put out a good statement in which he noted first and foremost that fertility is not a disease. If it is, convince all the couples that are struggling with infertility, many of whom are spending tens of thousands of dollars to try and correct... Read more

The Case Against Alphabet Soup

Last updated on: July 7, 2011 at 6:24 am   By Pia de Solenni

Given my own alphabet collection of degrees, people are surprised when I suggest that college may not be the end all and be all. I just came across a recent article by John Stossel in which he argues that college can be a scam. I couldn’t agree more. From what I’ve seen, it seems like people often go to college or pursue graduate work when they can’t think of anything else to do. It’s a respectable, if expensive, punt. Even... Read more

So Much For Quick & Easy Euthanasia

Last updated on: June 27, 2011 at 7:40 am   By Pia de Solenni

As a follow up to my recent piece on euthanasia, I thought it worth sharing this sad story on a euthanasia procedure that wasn’t as quick and trouble free as promised. The patient tried to commit suicide twice before going to a clinic in Switzerland to be euthanized. Clearly, he was suffering and was not properly treated. And his final exit didn’t go smoothly either. In addition to the depression he must have been suffering, he pain was not well... Read more

Euthanasia, Why Not? Love Is Stronger Than Death
