On Monday, my baby, Macklin, started kindergarten.  So Sunday night bedtime was a time to reflect on how big he was getting and how brave he is to be going to school.  And of course, Mack got to pick the song for him and Jacob at bedtime.  I have been singing to the kids at bedtime since they were small and I dare say it is as much for me as for them.  But they do still ask for songs on occasion and I am only too happy to oblige.

Now I must admit that I have a very limited repertoire of songs — and am not that good — so I will sing only the ones that I can actually get through without completely embarrassing myself.  My husband on the other hand, has a lovely tone and has a whole set of songs that the kids love.  And it not surprising that they often ask for him to sing and not me.

On this night, Mack wanted Leo to sing his favorite song, The Rainbow Connection.  So I got to lay back and listen with the boys to the sweet sound of Leo’s voice and reflect on the words that we have sung to the kids a thousands times……

Why are there so many songs about rainbows

and what’s on the other side

Rainbows are visions, they’re only illusions

And rainbows have nothing to hide

So we’ve been told, some choose to believe it

I think they’re wrong wait and see

Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection

the lovers, the dreamers and me

Who said that every wish would be asked and answered

When wished on a morning star

Somebody thought of it, and someone believed it

and look where it’s gotten so far

What’s so amazing that keeps us star gazing

What do we think we might see

Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection

the lovers, the dreamers and me

Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices

I’ve heard them calling my name

Are these the sweet sounds that call the young sailor

I think they’re one and the same

I’ve heard it too many times to ignore it

There’s something I am supposed to be

Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection

the lovers, the dreamers and me

I laid there on the bed with tearing streaming down my face as the boys drifted off to sleep and thinking of my dreams for those boys……that they love, that they dream, that they look for rainbows, that they hear the call of all that they are supposed to be.

And that they have a good day at school……because each great adventure starts with the courage to take the very first step.
