quran day 18

This chapter is the twin of Al-Kahf before. It is about the rejuvenation of the zakariya stage. Zakariya, the symbol of a nation, is afflicted by old age and he is given solutions by Allah to breathe new life into it.

The entirety of the solution can be summed up by the attainment of ‘yahya’ (literally, constant life). With the coming of yahya, we find the third party declaration of peace (salaamun 3alaihi – 19/15).

Next comes the story of maryam and isa. Allah tells us to vivify maryam in the system of zakaria. maryam represents the initiative towards the spiritual revolution of isa. She finds retreat away from her people towards a rising place (of evolution). It is then she is visited by a spirit of Allah to give her the humanizing coming of isa, the potential of man. She achieves this by practising a life of abstinence till she reaches a period of great difficulty (this is the process of fasting to Ramadhan which also brings revelation, 2/183-187).

Isa then is born and goes to his people bringing new revelation. This connects to his story in 3/35-64. His people eventually win but after his departure, they become sectarian again. Isa does however bring peace in the first person (salaamun 3alayya – 19/33)

This chapter ends (from verse 87) with the comparison of taking for Allah a son and intercessor. Quran rather promotes our own sole relationship with Allah.
