Chronic Pain and Sainthood

St. Lidwina found comfort in accepting her pain as Mary accepted God’s will, understanding herself to submit to it willingly for love of God. In this way, she reclaimed her pain as a voluntary act and offering—she rejected the idea of even being healed miraculously. Read more

In this recipe of necessary debt turned to lifelong burden, the institution calling itself the moral center of a Christian nation specifically fails to provide an avenue to release the debts it itself holds against its citizens. Read more

Giving Tuesday: An Opportunity to Reflect

Last updated on: December 2, 2024 at 11:54 am   By Daniel Jean Perrier

Whether involved with the official organization or not, the unofficial “holiday” serves as a day to turn gratitude into local giving. The feeling of gratitude is known to increase charitable giving. Kamala the Prosecutor vs. Trump the Felon

Last updated on: August 27, 2024 at 8:16 pm   By Daniel Jean Perrier

We are hurtling toward the 2024 election, and the lead-up has been unhinged at best. Regardless of what I think of Harris, Biden’s stepping aside has made space for a candidate who is both mentally competent and charismatic. With a new candidate comes a new strategy, and the Democrats have an easy narrative laid before them, one they have taken up: prosecutor Harris versus felon Trump. Harris has supercharged one of the go-to talking points of this election, Trump’s criminal history. But there is much more packed into this easy soundbite than Trump’s misdeeds, with implications that must be examined. Read more

Psychedelic Christians: Magic Mushrooms and Mystics

Last updated on: July 21, 2024 at 4:05 pm   By Daniel Jean Perrier

The Apocalypse of John is a particularly vivid and often horrifying account of an eschatological vision. The author reports the visions as an account of his experience in exile on the island of Patmos. The account might be described as “psychedelic”, with the iconography of a “bad trip”. It has become a fun theory to attribute the texts to a similar experience. But is it any more than an interesting theory? Read more

Israel’s Ecocide Against Palestine

Last updated on: July 7, 2024 at 9:14 pm   By Daniel Jean Perrier

As the destruction of Palestine and its people continues to run rampant, understanding ecocide and its operation in colonialism becomes ever more prescient. Two staple plants of Palestinian culture have been targeted by the Zionist regime for decades, eroding Palestinian culture and Palestinians’ economic health and autonomy. Destruction of orchards kept for thousands of years is part of a Zionist mission to eliminate evidence of Palestinian life and tending to the land in the area to support a narrative that the land was previously uninhabited, that existing peoples were simply transient, and that the establishment of a Jewish state in the area is a just reclamation of untended land. Read more

Pride is the greatest sin, or so we are told. It is one of the seven deadly sins, the straight path to hell. Can we slip ourselves from the loud self and mutual love in the concept of our pride, and that which we should avoid, that which sends us away from God and to sin? Read more
