I am a Christian and a Southern Baptist Pastor of Vanguard Church in Colorado Springs. Why would a Christian and a Southern Baptist Christian Church take the time to stand publicly with Jewbelong.com? Maybe you have never heard of Jewbelong.com. I would encourage you to go to their website and read who they are, first.

The war in the Middle East sparked by October 7, 2024, has been raging now for two plus years. But this is just the latest conflict in a long ongoing battle that began with Abraham in the book of Genesis roughly 4000 thousand years ago. Yes, I know some would disagree and say that Muslims did not originate with Ishmael. I also know that the descendants of Ishmael migrated to the southern part of modern-day Israel thousands of years ago. For the sake of this discussion, I am going to argue that Islam and Judaism both came from Abraham. I wrote on this issue a few years ago, and here is that article link: https://www.patheos.com/blogs/pastorkelly/2023/10/is-israel-right-to-fight/

The Jews and the Muslims all get their origination from Abraham. But the debate is not about Abraham, it is about Hagar and Sarah. God didn’t just promise Abraham. He promised this seed would come through Sarah. Hagar gave birth to Ishmael who became the father of all the Muslim nations. Sarah gave birth to Isaac who became the next chosen seed in the lineage of Abraham which is ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Yet, ironically, neither the Muslims nor the Jews claim Jesus and herein lies the problem.

Know Jesus. Know Peace.

No Jesus. No Peace.

Sadly, very few on either side cares to know what Jesus thinks about this.

Our job as Christians is to take the Gospel to everyone both Jew and Gentile, which includes the Palestinians. And by the way, there are Christian Palestinians who have suffered greatly at the hands of both Jews and Muslims.

As Christians we believe Jews and Muslims need to hear the Gospel and receive it in Jesus’ name. This is not in doubt, is not the debate, and is not the issue that both the Jews and Muslims are fighting over in the Middle East. I realize this is a very complex issue, but it comes back to one simple question and then the application to a complex issue. Did the Promise from God to Abraham come through Sarah, the mother of Isaac, or did the Promise from God to Abraham come through Hagar, the mother of Ishmael? The answer to this question determines who should own the land in Israel, today.

Before I go further into this discussion, I want to establish a premise that I believe is important for all who read this article. The conflict between Palestinians and Jews is modern day evidence that the Gospel must be the focus and that the Bible’s historical recording of the Promise through Abraham is still applicable for today.

God blessed Abraham and said in Genesis 17:5,

No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. 6 I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and. I will make you into nations, and kings shall come from you. 7 And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring…8…I will give to you…the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession, and I will be their God.

That establishes the covenant between God and Abraham and tells us today who should receive and live on the land of Israel.

But herein lies the problem. Ishmael and Isaac are both offspring of Abraham and thus it would seem that both have the right to the land of Israel.

In Genesis 17:15-21 God came to Abraham and gave a more specific calling to he and to his wife Sarah. She was the chosen woman who would bear the Promise seed of Abraham. In Genesis 21:1-2 this promise was fulfilled. Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the time of which God has spoken to him. Genesis 21:3 tells us he named him Isaac.

Not long after Isaac’s birth, Sarah would require Abraham to remove Hagar and Ishmael from their family’s promised inheritance from God. Genesis 21:11 says this was very displeasing to Abraham because of his son Ishmael. Genesis 21:12 says,

“But God said to Abraham, “Be not displeased because of the boy (Ishmael)…Whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, for through Isaac shall your offspring be named.

But this was not the end of the story for Hagar and Ishmael. Because of Abraham, God gave Ishmael a promise too. In Genesis 21:13 the Lord says to Abraham,

I will make a nation of the slave woman also, because he is your offspring.

God later builds on this promise when He says to Hagar about Ishmael in Genesis 21:18,

I will make him (Ishmael) into a great nation.

God intended for Isaac’s descendants to receive the land that is now known as Israel. But God also intended for Ishmael to be a great nation. Both have come true today roughly 4000 years later. This should fascinate anyone whether you are a Jew, a Muslim, or an everyday American Gentile Christian like me.

God wants Jews to have the land in Israel. He wants Gentiles like me to benefit from the land given to the Jews through being grafted in by Jesus, the most famous Jew ever who is also the Son of God, God in the flesh, the Savior of world.

However, this is not how it has played out. Jews were displaced from their own land until WW II. Not only displaced but millions of them were annihilated in gas chambers while churches across Germany and Europe stood with Hitler. Because of the courage of Winston Churchill and others, on May 14, 1948, Israel became an independent nation, again. Do you know how long Israel was not a nation with land before this?

2011 years.

No people group in history have been repressed and mistreated like Jews.

The last time Israel was a nation with land was 63 BCE. That’s almost 100 years before the resurrection of Jesus.

If you are not a person of faith who gives credence to the Holy Bible, you might reconsider.

God wants Israel, the descendants of Isaac, to have her land.

God wants Muslims, the descendants of Ishmael, to be a great nation.

God wants Christians to support both through Jesus Christ.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is for everyone.

The Bible tells us in John 10:10 that the Devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy. We see this very clearly in the Middle East in Israel and throughout. We as a nation, the United States, is consumed with ongoing war and conflict with middle east countries. So far, the United States has maintained its support of Israel having the land God promised her through Isaac. But we have work to do there as we have work to do to show respect and support to Muslim nations as well. Most of the Middle East sees the United States as a Christian nation. You may not agree with this title, but nonetheless, that is how they predominately see it. Because of this, much of the conflict in the Middle East between Muslims, Jews, and Christians is seen as a Holy War or a religious war that non-faith people want nothing to do with and use this as validation that religion is a phony hoax used to control the masses. Sadly, this turns many from the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

My intention as a Southern Baptist Pastor and a Christian in the United States is to seek ways to re-establish the Promise God gave Abraham through Isaac 4000 years ago. It is important that Christians understand that we are grafted into the Promise of Abraham to Isaac through his descendant, Jesus Christ. Jesus fulfilled the Abrahamic covenant on the cross of Calvary. He said, “It is finished.” This meant a few things, one thing it meant is, “The covenant Promise to Abraham through Isaac is complete in Jesus’ finished work on the cross.”

Many years ago, I served on a board with Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family, for The Center For Christian And Jewish Dialogue. We hosted a banquet every year. It was a powerful movement of solidarity. Yet there came a time when that organization said, “We don’t want any Christians a part of this organization who want to proselytize Jews to become followers of Jesus.” I respectfully resigned. I can’t make anyone be Christian. I can’t make anyone believe in Jesus. I won’t push my faith in Jesus over on to others who don’t want it, but I also can’t be a part of an organization that doesn’t allow for honest dialogue. For dialogue to be mutually respectful, we must allow people to share their faith and seek to persuade others to consider our perspectives. When these sorts of tactics are not welcomed then we remove away true dialogue. But neither do we want people helping others like Vanguard is with Jewbelong.com while secretly trying to change them to Christian at any cost.

My job on planet earth as a Christian is to make Jesus famous. I am here to tell everyone about the someone who died for everyone. Jewbelong.com understands that about me as a Southern Baptist Pastor and a Christian in Jesus. I am grateful for Archie Gottesman and Scott Piro. They are beautiful Jewish human beings created in the image of God. My and the Southern Baptist Church I pastor, Vanguard Church in Colorado Springs, stand with Jewbelong.com. This does not mean we support the mistreatment of Muslims, but neither do they. Most Jews, Christians, and Muslims want peace in our world.

God wants the three groups to live in peace with each other. But for this to happen. I believe three things must occur:

Call me idealistic, but it is a worthy endeavor that Almighty God calls us to live out in Jesus’ name as followers of Jesus Christ.

If you would like to join in support of this, go to Jewbelong.com. Tell them Pastor Kelly sent you!

Let’s turn on the light of peace in Jesus’ name!

We can make a difference for generations to come!

Blessings,

Pastor Kelly
