15 Years Ago Today Rich Mullins Died and I’ve Missed Him Ever Since – Here’s Why

Last updated on: September 19, 2012 at 3:26 pm   By Tim Suttle

Fifteen years ago today my band Satellite Soul had just struggled in off the road after driving most of the night to get back to KC for a gig. We crashed at my apartment and were just waking up at two or three in the afternoon to go to our sound check when we got a call from a friend in Wichita telling us that Rich Mullins was dead. I had never lost a hero before. It was way more... Read more

8 in 10 Americans Think There Should Be More Limits On Campaign Contributions: it’s time to get rid of Citizens United

Last updated on: September 19, 2012 at 10:24 am   By Tim Suttle

There’s an interesting article in the New York Times about public opinion on campaign finance. I am convinced that this is one of the more important issues facing our society. Citizen’s United presents the most sweeping challenge to the electoral process since Jim Crow laws. The article says: Americans don’t like all the cash that’s going to super political action committees and other outside groups that are pouring millions of dollars into races for president and Congress. More than 8... Read more

Tuesdays With Walter Part 03: Leadership Reflections from Walter Brueggemann’s The Prophetic Imagination

Last updated on: September 25, 2012 at 10:28 am   By Tim Suttle

Review of Chapter one: Reality: We have been enculturated, all of us – claimed by our culture and traditioned by it. Even for the church, the culture is our tradition. Cause: Why are we enculturated? Because we have abandoned the Christian tradition, and thus experience a full (or nearly so), loss of Christian identity (we don’t know who we are so we think of ourselves as Americans). Tension: The church cannot reverse this trend by trying to attack the culture.... Read more

I’m Taking the No-Cable Pledge: I will not watch MSNBC, FOX News, or CNN or any other cable news network until after the election.

Last updated on: September 17, 2012 at 1:39 pm   By Tim Suttle

I have decided to take a pledge. Now, I’m not normally a pledge taker, but for the sake of my sanity I am willing to make this one exception because I think my own peacefulness might just hang in the balance. I’m calling it the “no-cable pledge.” Here it is: “I pledge that I will not watch MSNBC, FOX News, or CNN or any other cable news network until after the election.” I want you to take the pledge, too. Here’s... Read more

Monday Morning Confessional

Last updated on: September 17, 2012 at 7:55 am   By Tim Suttle

I confess that a lot of pastors I know take Mondays off, but I have never been able to do this. Monday feels like the main day for me to try and make some headway on my constantly over-long to-do list. I confess that today’s list seems daunting and demoralizing, so I may not get that much done today. I confess that I’m trying to grow new grass in the bare patches of my yard. I confess that I’m not... Read more

Embracing the Power of Contemplation

Last updated on: September 16, 2012 at 7:19 am   By Tim Suttle

Over the past few years I’ve found Richard Rohr to be such a helpful guide in my quest to grow up and actually be a follower of Jesus. As a Protestant, it’s been important for me to find people from the Catholic faith to teach me the things that God has preserved for his people through their tradition. The practice of contemplation – largely preserved and practiced by the monastics – is challenging me. Contemplation is really a way to... Read more

Kansas Sec. of State Considering Removing President Obama’s name from the Ballot

Last updated on: September 14, 2012 at 10:14 am   By Tim Suttle

I’m a Kansan born and bred. I graduated from a state school (K-State), and even cheer for the Jayhawks now and then (not when they play K-State, of course). But I’m feeling a bit embarrassed of my state officials today. Slate is reporting that there is a birther initiative to consider taking president Obama’s name off the ballot in Kansas on the grounds that he’s not really a citizen of the U.S. Here’s an excerpt from the article. Evan McMorris-Santoro... Read more

The Film at the Center of the Middle East Protests Was Produced by American Christians

Last updated on: September 13, 2012 at 2:54 pm   By Tim Suttle

I just watched the 14 min trailer for the film at the center of the violent protests which claimed the life of Ambassador Stevens. I’m not a film critic, but I think it’s safe to say that this is terrible stuff. It reminds me of the Monty Python Life of Brian stuff in that it’s low budget with elements like obvious fake beards & low-tech effects – but it’s not meant to be funny. What’s even more disturbing is that... Read more

Do You Get to Use Your Strengths at Work? A New Gallup Study Says a Majority of Americans Don’t

Last updated on: September 13, 2012 at 8:56 am   By Tim Suttle

I read an interesting bit of research this morning from the Gallup organization on whether or not people feel as though they get to use their strengths throughout the day as a normal part of their working life. The research was a part of all of the Strengths-Finder stuff they’ve put out over the years. Lots of businesses and churches use the Strengths-Finder tools and language to improve productivity. Over half of the people they surveyed (5000+) said that they... Read more

How I Got Saved at Age Six (and lived to tell about it)

Last updated on: September 12, 2012 at 11:06 am   By Tim Suttle

I’m on retreat and was reflecting on my baptism. Here’s what I wrote: I was six years old when I prayed the prayer I was told would allow me to become a Christian. It was a Sunday night in the little church I grew up in. Our children’s Choir was rehearsing on the stage because we had a program the next week. Twenty of us were sitting in those little indestructible wooden chairs while we practiced our two part harmony.... Read more
