The Mormonizing of America: John Krakauer, Stephen Mansfield, and the Mormon Moment
Last updated on: November 15, 2012 at 8:19 pm By Tim Suttle
I have known next to nothing about Mormons. Growing up as an evangelical Christian I was taught that Mormonism was a cult. A few youth group friends got into studying how to evangelize Mormons. They learned its history, and honed rhetorical strategies on the off chance they’d get to witness to a Mormon. I thought it was a waste of time. I had read the brochure – Mormons didn’t believe in the Trinity, black people were not acceptable to God,... Read more

Franklin Graham Appears on CNN’s Belief Blog: How Much Damage Has He Done?
Last updated on: November 15, 2012 at 10:01 am By Tim Suttle
Reuters reported Monday that political watchdog and secularist groups are asking for an investigation into the political involvement of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association during the 2012 election. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics filed a complaint with the IRS asking them to review tax exempt status for the BGEA. Franklin has taken a lot of heat for involving his father’s organization in the campaign to elect Mitt Romney, a practicing Mormon – here’s an article with several links. Franklin spoke... Read more

The Best or Worst Pollsters in the 2012 Election – How did Nate Silver Do It?
Last updated on: November 13, 2012 at 9:31 am By Tim Suttle
Nate Silver has gotten a lot of press for his near perfect election night predictions. In 2008 Silver gained popularity and influence after he called 49 out of 50 states. Many pundits were predicting that Silver would crash and burn in 2012. Instead, he outperformed his 2008 predictions and now that Florida has been called for president Obama, Silver can tout a perfect record 50 out of 50 states called correctly. How did Silver do it? Only Likely Voters Matter:... Read more

Monday Morning Confessional
Last updated on: November 12, 2012 at 10:32 am By Tim Suttle
Quick Note: the purpose of Monday Morning Confessional is simple. Confession is good for the soul. It’s good to get things off your chest, even if they are small things and random thoughts. I post these each week in the hope that you will join in. Make your own confession! You’ll feel better 🙂 I confess that I have a warm fuzzy feeling inside this morning. The K-State Wildcats are number one in the BCS poll (K-State is my school),... Read more

For Religious Conservatives, Election Was a Disaster – I Couldn’t Disagree More
Last updated on: November 10, 2012 at 10:37 am By Tim Suttle
Dr. Albert Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville and one of the most powerful leaders within evangelical circles called the results of the presidential election an “evangelical disaster.” I could disagree more. This election was a gift. From NPR: Mohler says white evangelicals moved in lockstep: Seventy-nine percent voted for Republican Mitt Romney, the same percentage as voted for President George W. Bush in 2004. He says they boldly telegraphed their concerns about Obama, and “our message... Read more

The Onion News never disappoints. This is a seriously hilarious video. Take two minutes and enjoy. “This thing is young, it’s exciting, it feeds off fear and terror.” You’ve got to watch the crawler at the bottom. One comment reads, “Second term secured, Obama shows Americans cool sword he’s had for awhile.” God bless the Onion for helping us all laugh at ourselves. Read more

4 Things Liberals Can Learn From Conservatives
Last updated on: November 8, 2012 at 3:40 pm By Tim Suttle
Facebook was a bloodbath yesterday. An early update read, “Friends… if you are an Obama supporter go ahead and delete me from your friends list. You are DEAD to me!!!” … the first sign that the post-election climate would be rough. One of my favorite blogs read “Mourning in America,” lamenting the coming ruination of America by the power-crazed, inept, baby-killing Obama… another sign. As the day progressed, scores of comments, tweets, articles, and interviews ranged from hopelessly sad and... Read more

Whirlybirds and Ordinary Times: Reflections on Faith and the Changing of the Seasons
Last updated on: November 8, 2012 at 8:59 am By Tim Suttle
If there’s one book that you must read this fall – especially during the holidays – it’s a brand new book out by my friend Katie Savage called Whirlybirds and Ordinary Times: Reflections on Faith and the Changing of the Seasons. Whirlybirds, Katie’s first book, just released this week on Howard Books (a division of Simon & Schuster) and it’s honest and raw and hilarious. Using the framework of the liturgical calendar Katie walks the reader through these rich stories... Read more

Justin Welby to Replace Rowan Williams as Archbishop of Canterbury
Last updated on: November 7, 2012 at 6:23 pm By Tim Suttle
From the Daily Mail in the U.K: Former oil boss who opposes same sex marriage emerges as favourite to become next Archbishop of Canterbury. Sources at Westminster say that the Right Reverend Justin Welby will be announced as successor to Dr Rowan Williams in the next 48 hours. The choice comes after months of tortured deliberations and less than a year after Dr Welby took up his first appointment as bishop in Durham. A former oil industry executive who opposes same sex...
