Jehoshua: Signs and Wonders

Last updated on: April 30, 2014 at 11:00 am   By Tim Suttle

“People have been looking for Jesus for a long time, but never quite like this.” – N.T. Wright, “Five Gospels but No Gospel” I’ve heard many descriptions of the historical Jesus over the years. Garrett Glass’ Jesus seems as unfamiliar to me as any. Billed as a work of historical fiction, the self-published Jehoshua: Signs and Wonders is heavy on the fiction… not so much on the history, though. I’ve been reading this book for a few weeks now, off and... Read more

Botched Oklahoma Execution: Killing in the Name of the State

Last updated on: April 30, 2014 at 7:58 am   By Tim Suttle

It least 4.1% of death row inmates are innocent of the crime for which they are sentenced to die. That fact alone should be enough to stop capital punishment for good. Couple that with the reality that states without the death penalty consistently have lower murder rates, and you’ve got a solid argument against. Add the evidence that retribution does nothing to help the grief and loss of victim’s families–in fact it involves them in a 10-12 year legal battle... Read more

How to Talk to Your Children About God (Rainy Day Repost)

Last updated on: April 29, 2014 at 9:11 am   By Tim Suttle

It’s pouring down rain in Kansas City, so here’s a little rainy day repost from a little over a year ago. The post was developed from questions I have gotten over the years from parents in my church who are trying their best to pass along their faith to their children. They don’t want to screw this up. Often the questions come as parents realize the ways in which their faith was passed on to them by their parents were... Read more

Monday Morning Confessional

Last updated on: April 28, 2014 at 6:29 am   By Tim Suttle

I confess that I am still preoccupied with questions of time. My ongoing experimental attempts at time management are progressing slowly. My overall goal is to work on my schedule and job performance until I see the consistent and fruitful observance of Sabbath day every week. My most recent early to bed, early to rise approach has begun to bear at least a little bit of fruit. I’ve been setting my alarm for 5:30 every morning since sometime in March.... Read more

Daniel Kirk Takes On Michael Bird’s Take On Ehrman’s Take On Jesus

Last updated on: April 26, 2014 at 6:37 am   By Tim Suttle

Daniel Kirk is one of my favorite bloggers. He wrote a very critical review of Michael Bird’s chapter in How God Became Jesus, a book written in response to How Jesus Became God by Bart Ehrman. Kirk takes issue with Bird’s sense of humor, but mostly Kirk takes apart Bird’s argument. Kirk’s critical analysis was that Bird makes assertions but not a coherent argument. Kirk’s main argument is that Bird doesn’t understand what Ehrman is doing, and therefore Bird’s attempt... Read more

Easter 1A, John 20:1-18 – Disney’s Frozen & the Resurrection

Last updated on: April 24, 2014 at 6:41 am   By Tim Suttle

On Easter Sunday we showed this clip just before the sermon. When the song started, you could hear little voices all over the room start to sing along. The sound took my breath away. It was our kids. On Christmas & Easter we have all of our children, even the babies, join us in worship; that way no one misses out. They knew the song & couldn’t help themselves. After a couple lines the singing died away (I think the... Read more

Happy Earth Day! (Or as we evangelicals like to call it, Tuesday).

Last updated on: April 22, 2014 at 8:48 am   By Tim Suttle

Evangelicals are known for our skepticism of science. We’re also a tad bit prone toward conspiracy theories. I was a biology major at a state school known for agriculture, so I spent to much time listening to the dynamics of global warming to shrug it off as a hoax. Yet, we still have a fair number of folks in our tribe who deny the idea that climate change is even happening. Many think it’s happening, but humans aren’t contributing to... Read more

Monday Morning Confessional

Last updated on: April 21, 2014 at 11:44 am   By Tim Suttle

I confess that I love Easter Sunday. I love that everybody shows up for church on the same day. I love that the culture hasn’t found an effective way to completely commercialize it yet. I love that Easter means that family and friends will be spending long hours together talking, laughing, telling stories, and playing games. I love the energy in the worship. Most of all I love to tell the story about love overcoming fear, and life overcoming death.... Read more

Wendell Berry on the Practice of Resurrection: The Mad Farm Liberation Front

Last updated on: April 20, 2014 at 11:21 am   By Tim Suttle

I do not love poetry, typically, when it is not set to music. Wendell Berry is one notable exception, and this happens to be one of my favorites. I’m always struck by how clearly Berry is able to see and describe the consequences of the way we choose to act as a society. I love even more that his version of redemption always involves a little madness. “Be like the fox” he tells us, “who makes more tracks than necessary, some... Read more
