Wilco Show at the Crossroads

I can’t explain what it is about Wilco. You just have to experience it. The first artist I ever really loved was Rich Mullins. He was not just a musician or a songwriter, but he was a prophet, in a sense. After Rich died in 1997, there have been a few others come along who seem to have a similar effect. Bill Malonee (VOL) was first, then Sean Kelly of the Samples. I found some resonance with Bob Dylan and U2, but it wasn’t until I heard OK Computer for the first time that I felt like I was alive again. After the Radiohead phase (which is still going, only not as intensely) I was introduced to Wilco. It didn’t take long for me to come unglued for this band. They are simple like nothing I’ve ever experienced – musically speaking. If you are looking to experience the Wilco – I’d do it in this order:

1. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot:
You might as well jump in the deep end. Thus far this is their magnum opus.

2. Being There:
This will help you to see that this is a country band at heart – this record has some of my favorite songs on it.

3. Summerteeth:
I know some Wilco fans pan this because it’s too produced or whatever. But if you check their set-lists on their tours they play the crap out of this record. You have to know these songs.

After that you are on your own, but I’d do A Ghost is Born next, then the live record. Afer that buy the new release and just keep up with them as they keep on coming.

My buddy Scott took me to see them for my 38th birthday last week. (which is, by the way, the age Rich was when he died.) This picture is from right where we were standing. (Thanks Todd for the picture & Ryno for coming along as well). Freaking great show, great venue, great crowd and honest to God fireworks during Kidsmoke. If you ever have the chance to see Wilco in concert, do it. It’s a steal at twice the price.

Set List:
1. Via Chicago 2. Company In My Back 3. You Are My Face 4. I Am Trying To Break Your Heart 5. Pot Kettle Black 6. Handshake Drugs 7. Side With The Seeds 8. A Shot In The Arm 9. She’s A Jar 10. Impossible Germany 11. Pick Up The Change 12. Box Full Of Letters 13. Jesus, Etc. 14. Too Far Apart 15. Walken

Encore 1:
16. Hummingbird 17. Hesitating Beauty 18. Hate It Here 19. Heavy Metal Drummer

Encore 2:
20. Red-Eyed And Blue 21. I Got You (At The End Of The Century) 22. Casino Queen 23. Outtasite (Outta Mind) 24. Spiders (Kidsmoke)
