Imbolc Blessings!

Last updated on: January 29, 2011 at 2:29 pm   By Star Foster

I’ve been trying to write something somewhat insightful all morning but it’s warm and sunny and springlike outside. I can’t concentrate. I just want to soak in the sun and smile. So here’s some music and may spring come to your house soon! Read more

Morality on a Bun: Chick-fil-A is Anti-Gay

Last updated on: January 28, 2011 at 6:46 pm   By Star Foster

Here in the South we have a fast food joint called Chick-fil-A. Fried chicken, waffle fries and the best vanilla soft serve ice cream on the planet. They have cute commercials and ads featuring barely literate cows. Oh and they “don’t accept homosexual couples.” You see, the tasty chicken joint that’s famously closed on Sunday has a charitable branch called the WinShape Foundation, which runs a retreat which expressly prohibits homosexual couples. Plus they often give money to anti-gay organizations.... Read more

Wicca Series: Books on “Advanced Wicca”?

Last updated on: January 28, 2011 at 10:39 am   By Star Foster

Every Monday and Friday in January we will be asking people questions about Wicca. Want to weigh in? Find the next question at the bottom of this post! In such an experiential religion, is there such a thing as a book on “Advanced Wicca”? *Once again a reminder that everyone responding to this series is speaking for themselves and not for their tradition as a whole.* Callisto (Alexandrian tradition) responds: I suppose it depends on whom you ask. There are... Read more

Guest Post: Henry Buchy responds to the Feri schism

Last updated on: January 27, 2011 at 9:02 am   By Guest Contributor

Editor’s Note: This post is in response to The Sundering of Feri by T. Thorn Coyle. My sister Thorn makes some good points, and very convincing too. I will offer my own ideas of the sundering or schism, because it is similar to the schisms which occurred in Buddhism or Christianity, or even Islam. Yet this division, this sundering is in no way about claiming a one true way, that one approach to Feri is the only correct one. It’s... Read more

Fun Facts For the Deity-Owned

Last updated on: January 26, 2011 at 9:57 am   By laurapatsouris

Recently I have run into lots of people who have recently been claimed by a Patron Deity. Sometimes they have been the ones to initiate the contact, but more frequently the Deity in question has swooped in out of the blue to claim ownership. When this occurs it can be intense, disorienting and a bit scary, especially if the Deity in question is from a different tradition or pantheon than the person in question expected. This is something I’m quite... Read more

Pagan and Pro-Choice

Last updated on: January 25, 2011 at 10:31 am   By Star Foster

Also see Galina Krasskova’s and K.C. Hulsman‘s posts on abortion. I once planned to have an abortion. I didn’t need to but I don’t regret it. I was young, my boyfriend decided to be “sneaky” and I was very poor and alone in the world. I could not have had a child then. I could not have afforded proper healthcare to ensure a healthy pregnancy. I could not have counted on my boyfriend to be anything but additional stress. So... Read more

Wyrd Designs – Heathenry and Abortion

Last updated on: January 25, 2011 at 9:44 am   By wyrddesigns

Also see Galina Krasskova’s and Star Foster‘s posts on abortion. Through the years I have been asked, especially by people outside of my religion, what stance if any that the heathen religion had on the issue of abortion. Unlike other religions (such as Christianity), there is nothing that specifically prohibits abortion within our religious worldview. Ancient Heathens took a practical, not a religious, worldview as it applied to pregnancy and children. Two things were considered in the fate of a... Read more

Religious and Pro-Choice

Last updated on: January 25, 2011 at 9:43 am   By krasskova

Also see Star Foster‘s and K.C. Hulsman’s posts on abortion. We’ve just passed the anniversary of Roe v Wade and I am filled with dismay. In the forty years since this landmark decision was made, abortion rights have been chipped away little by little each year rendering it an empty victory. This saddens and angers me. I wasn’t initially planning on writing anything today. Certainly I wasn’t planning on commenting on this anniversary, but I strongly feel that at least... Read more

Wicca Series: Should Her Hidden Children be more public?

Last updated on: January 24, 2011 at 12:45 pm   By Star Foster

Every Monday and Friday in January we will be asking people questions about Wicca. Want to weigh in? Find the next question at the bottom of this post! Wiccans are known as “Her Hidden Children”, but should Wicca be more public? Naya Aerodiode (Silver Spiral coven) responds: I don’t feel that Wicca needs to be any more public. At this point, there is sufficient information available to dispel any unsavory myths about Wicca. If someone wants to continue believing that... Read more

Plagiarism, Copyright Infringement and Piracy

Last updated on: January 23, 2011 at 10:32 am   By Star Foster

There seems to be this mistaken idea floating about the Pagan community that the written word is “free”. Literally almost every two weeks somebody on Facebook posts another warning and call to action regarding theft of intellectual property. Part of this may be because plagiarism and piracy is so common in our sacred literature. Gardner ripped off Crowley and Leland, and today people pass along rituals, poetry and texts without regard for it’s origin or author. While I don’t think... Read more
