So this is Christmas…
Last updated on: December 25, 2011 at 11:04 am By Star Foster
Such a quiet day. There is a hushed stillness over the land. I imagine in homes all across the country children have woken to find Santa has arrived. There is excitement and giddy and the fumbling of parents for coffee and tea. In a way, I suppose today marks the end of my solitary experiment. Did I enjoy it? I did. It was nice to have a season free of stress and obligations to traditions I don’t much care for.... Read more

A Little Holiday Cheer: 13 Songs to Rock Around the Tree
Last updated on: December 24, 2011 at 10:36 am By Star Foster
I’m a Grinch. I admit it. But I plan to watch It’s A Wonderful Life this weekend and curl up with some Hogfather. I’m not immune to either fun nor holiday cheer. So here: 13.What’s This? – The Nightmare Before Christmas 12. Marley & Marley – Statler & Waldorf 11. Meteora – The Christmas Toy Long before there was Woody and Buzz, there was Rugby and Meteora. The cat toy is my favorite. 10. Cool Yule – Bette Midler 9.... Read more

Imagining A Post-Gender World
Last updated on: December 23, 2011 at 12:42 pm By Star Foster
This morning I was puttering around my kitchen, fussing with toast and coffee, listening to Fleetwood Mac. I’d read Steve Provost’s post on gender discrimination in Paganism (a response of sorts to Devin Hunter’s post on the same topic) and I was trying to decide what, if anything, I should write about it this morning. I’ve touched on the topic before and it wasn’t well received. I think I argued that women who behave in traditionally masculine ways are admired... Read more

Hail the Unconquered Sun!
Last updated on: December 22, 2011 at 10:16 am By Star Foster
Actually here in Georgia it’s a bit rainy and drizzly. There wasn’t so much of a sunrise as a lighter shade of grey that dawned. But it’s the spirit that counts, right? Cara Schulz has an interesting idea regarding Solstice omens I’m giving a whirl, and adding my own kick to it. Makes sense to use some of the old traditions of my ancestors on this day rather than on New Year’s Day, which is really just an arbitrary calendar... Read more

Solstice Eve
Last updated on: December 21, 2011 at 5:38 pm By Star Foster
Have you ever stirred water in a glass and then tried to change direction? The current pushes back at you at first. I tried this exercise once in a swimming pool with a group of people. We all walked around in a circle in the pool until the water began to flow in the direction we were moving, and then we changed direction and moved against the current. It was harder than I expected. Even though I know it’s gravitational... Read more

Pagan Soup: Honoring the Past and Other Good Things
Last updated on: December 20, 2011 at 12:46 pm By Star Foster
So much to comment on this morning! First, all my love and respect to Devin Hunter, whose heartfelt blog post this morning resonated deeply with me. We are all human, and deserving of respect and human dignity. Our gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity, age, or physical ability do not strip us of our rights to our due respect and dignity. I have been told in the past that I cannot know the God, the Horned One, essentially because I have... Read more

When Interfaith Gets Ugly
Last updated on: December 19, 2011 at 10:38 pm By Star Foster
Patheos is a diverse place. I tend to think of it like a city with different quarters. There are good neighborhoods and bad neighborhoods, which shift depending on your point of view. There is the place I live, and the places I prefer to avoid. If Patheos is anything, it’s proof that, like patience, you should never pray to be more tolerant unless you wish to be tested. I believe having the tenets of your faith tested is a good... Read more

Why Emphasize Yule?
Last updated on: December 19, 2011 at 8:31 am By Star Foster
In the Wheel of the Year, Yule isn’t very important. It’s one of the minor holidays. It’s a bottom-rung holiday, less important than the four major fire festivals, and less important than the two most important of those: Beltane and Samhain. Yet Yule is given a lot of attention. We decorate, we buy presents, we sing holiday songs and give Yule far more attention that it’s equally important counterparts Ostara, Midsummer and Mabon. We treat Yule as if, well, as... Read more

Watch Me on AIB-TV!
Last updated on: December 18, 2011 at 11:51 am By Star Foster
So all this week you can catch the interview I did with AIB-TV streaming at 7:30 AM EST and 2 PM EST. I haven’t seen it yet, but I believe my hair looked quite nice. Not pink, but still nice. And that’s all I have this morning. It’s a quiet, lazy Sunday morning. I highly recommend reading in bed if you have the opportunity today. Read more

As Above, So Below
Last updated on: December 17, 2011 at 12:32 pm By Star Foster
I’ve been watching How the Universe Works and I’m fascinated. I think the thing I’m fascinated by most is how Wiccan cosmology and theology gives me a framework through which to understand the science before me. Though scientists are describing matter and antimatter as a battle between “good and evil” I’m seeing polarity in action. The opposites, the tension, these basic building blocks creating such wondrous diversity. I think the thing that fascinates me the most is this strange contradiction... Read more
