God the Father: Pagan Perspective on Father’s Day

Last updated on: June 28, 2012 at 3:58 pm   By Star Foster

My father has been dead for 13 years. He was a good guy. He was a bastard. He was human. He was my dad. I have a single picture of him, kept in the back of a book. I have never had the impulse to display or frame it. It’s not a particularly good picture. But it’s what he looked like when he was healthy, and I’d rather  remember that than the dessicated husk my family forced me to view... Read more

Keeping a Diary

Last updated on: June 28, 2012 at 3:58 pm   By Star Foster

I hate writing in a diary. This probably surprises you considering the copious amounts of blather produced on this blog. There are plenty of notebooks full of scribbles, and even a couple of magical/spiritual diaries that I started and never kept up. For a long time both the discipline of maintaining a diary, and focusing so much on myself, seemed impossible. Blogging has, in a strange way, resolved these issues. For over a year I updated this blog at least... Read more

Guest Post: Sarah W. Whedon shares “Why I Wrote Birth On The Labyrinth Path”

Last updated on: June 28, 2012 at 3:58 pm   By Star Foster

Editor’s Note: Patheos has an ebook publishing arm called Patheos Press. I’m very pleased to announce that the first Pagan e-book has been launched by Patheos Press, and it’s a lovely volume on Pagan pregnancy titled Birth on the Labyrinth Path. As Butterfly McQueen once famously said: I don’t know nothin’ about birthin’ babies! So I’m going to let author Sarah W. Whedon tell you about her book herself. – Star Where are the mama goddesses? How Do You Review Divination?

Last updated on: June 28, 2012 at 3:58 pm   By Star Foster

About once a year I get a professional divination consultation. Used to be local readers, but the past few years I’ve gotten them online or over the phone. The type of divination varies. Last year I was concerned about my ancestors and I went to Galina Krasskova for divination. It was interesting and helpful. I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad experience with divination, but I certainly have had different levels of quality, knowledge, counseling skill and depth. I... Read more

Are You Getting What You Need? (A Letter to My Readers)

Last updated on: June 28, 2012 at 3:58 pm   By Star Foster

I got a letter of encouragement from a reader regarding my crisis of faith. It was a nice letter, and I have been touched by everyone who has reached out privately and shared their story with me. In responding, I got carried away with the words. That happens to me from time to time. So even though I wrote this to one specific person, I feel a bit like I wrote it to all of my readers. So I’m sharing... Read more

Make Good Art and Do The Work: What Donald Michael Kraig and Neil Gaiman Have To Say About The Great Work

Last updated on: June 28, 2012 at 3:58 pm   By Star Foster

I’ve been thinking about The Great Work lately. It’s such a grandiose thing to say: I’m sitting here mulling over The Great Work. You should try saying it sometime with just a note of irritation in your voice and a steely, arched eyebrow. Preferably at Starbucks as you’re waiting in line. Apparently I’m not the only one. It’s not an unusual bit of magic for me to pop onto social media, check my RSS readers and rummage through my e-mail... Read more

Best Fundraising Idea EVER

Last updated on: June 28, 2012 at 3:58 pm   By Star Foster

I follow some atheist blogs so I knew a big fundraising campaign was gearing up for the Secular Student Alliance. Mostly it’s bloggers who are urging their readers to give, but Crommunist over at Freethought blogs went one better: he’s doing Youtube cover video requests in exchange for donations. I found it amusing to watch him do a cover of Josie and the Pussycats, and got a kick out of his rendition of Eye of the Tiger. As I watched... Read more

Laughter is Holy

Last updated on: June 28, 2012 at 3:58 pm   By Star Foster

Months ago I began doing something which became dubbed lolPagans (who coined that?). I snagged images of Pagan-ish characters from television and film, added some witty text and posted it online. The most popular one was from Practical Magic: And in the “time honored tradition” of memes, I found others had gone before me:   And others followed after me (no longer recall who made this originally): I thought that was hilarious, however you feel about the issue. Last night... Read more
