Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
I’m not an Age of Aquarius person. I am not Atlantis and Light. I view myself as rather earthy and more concerned with cabbages than chakras. Yet even I feel something in the air. Protests, revolts and unrest fill the news. Everything feels antsy. As one friend told me, they honestly feel like Phil Collin’s “In the Air Tonight” fits the current atmosphere.
It’s not just Egypt and Libya, or Wisconsin and Ohio. It’s in our very hearts. That Imbolc tide, pushing hidden things forth through earth heavy and compacted with rain and snow, is strong. It causes plants to bloom on the barest scrap of earth in rocky windy terrain. Things are hatching within us, sharp green shoots reaching like daggers toward the sun. This isn’t a comfortable time of year. It isn’t meant to be. It’s fraught with the perilous anticipation of Hope and Life.
So many of my friends are feeling like they are at a crossroads in their life right now. They are searching their hearts, examining their priorities and moving forward with greater purpose. I can’t pretend I’m not there myself. I’m trying to identify the areas of my life that aren’t working and figure out a way to push into spring with new vitality. It’s hard work. It’s the kind of gardening where you water your seeds with sweat and tears.
Yet, the massive unrest in the world feels like more than just Imbolc’s stirrings. Maybe it’s the stirrings of an Age. Of a Greater Wheel of the Eons turning in sync with the Wheel of the Year. I’m not certain. But I can feel it everywhere I go, and see it in every face I meet. It’s like cosmic birth pangs ringing gong-like through the atmosphere. It’s disturbing and inspiring at the same time. I’m both excited and terrified to see what it will bring forth. I’m watching and waiting and listening. Like Mr. Collins, I can feel it in the air…
