Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
It happens to all of us. Often when we say we’re going to do something but keep putting it off, or know we’re not doing the right thing but aren’t confident to make the necessary changes yet. Generally the Universe, the Gods, the Fates or what-have-you gives you a few chances to make the right moves. If not, then: WHAM! A metaphysical kick in the pants.
I have a bad habit of thinking that taking a break to watch some tv is the same as taking a nap. I’ve also been saying I was going to switch operating systems on my laptop and invest in an external hard drive. Now I knew I needed to get proper sleep in order to function well. I also knew my OS was nearing the end of it’s productive life. Did I act rationally and reasonably? Listening to my body and the Universe took a back seat to things I felt needed doing. The result?
I got physically sick and got a fatal computer virus all in the same week. All my own fault. I was tired, not feeling good because I hadn’t been taking care of myself, and clicked on a link I normally wouldn’t have which exploited the weaknesses in my OS and ran unchecked through my system. Killing the bug required killing all the files, pictures, videos, music and settings I’d acquired over two years. I slept maybe 24 hours out of 48.
I hate getting a metaphysical kick in the pants as much as anyone but they’re good things overall. They push us to do what must be done. I’m revamping my sleeping and eating patterns. Finally made the jump to the OS I’ve been dying to try and it actually makes me feel smarter and more confident. Stress over all the changes in my life may have pushed me into bad habits but a good swift kick has brought me back into alignment. Life is good and I can handle it’s challenges. I can handle them better if I just slow down, pay attention and trust my instincts.
