Inter-faith Coupling

Inter-faith Coupling 2010-04-29T05:47:01-04:00 muninn

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

Having your own faith is good – beneficial, even.  But what to do, when your partner/spouse holds different beliefs?

My partner, at this moment in time, is best described as agnostic.  He won’t say there isn’t some sort of higher power, but he would never admit to any higher power without copious evidence.

I am part of a religion that, if examined topically, ascribes to a bunch of beliefs that don’t make “sense” when applied to an agnostic point of view.

What to do?  I don’t tend to try to cause arguments regarding religion, in my home.  I also don’t want to accuse others of being “wrong;”  religion is so subjective, after all, no matter the experiences we’re had, personally.

I do believe what I believe.  I worship my ancestors, and my gods.  However, I don’t tend to do such things in front of my significant other.

Segregating my religion is inconvenient, but at the same time, it forces me to put aside time to really practice what I preach, which I find invaluable.

Sometimes, I wish that I had found someone who really believes what I do, so that I didn’t have to deal with a difference of beliefs.  But sometimes, I am also so grateful that other religions affect my viewpoint; for if I were comfortable in my narrow viewpoint, I might be more prone to be narrow-minded.  I truly appreciate having to think through all the view-points that I practice regularly.

Occasionally, it gets awkward when I’m trying to practice a ritual, and my significant other asks, “What are you doing?”

I tell him I’m practicing ritual.  in my life, that is example (and explanation) enough.  I appreciate that I am allowed to be free in my practices, no matter how strange they may appear.
