My/Our Great Work

Last updated on: May 31, 2016 at 12:03 pm   By Guest Contributor

Reading Star Foster’s blog post “Make Good Art and Do the Work” and watching Neil Gaiman’s speech to university graduates has had the wheels of my mind turning on the subject for several days. (Here’s the video and transcript.) Apparently I am the most stubborn person to contemplate a spiritual path because fate had to spell out my work for me in plain signs. I still forget it. I believe this because: I was born June 21 on the Summer... Read more

Every week there are new press releases, articles, information, and videos popping up concerning Paganism, spirituality, health, or disabilities. Community Linkage is a collection of useful information and sometimes entertainment for you. Deaf Pagan Community I got an email from Luna who started the Deaf Pagan Network. Service Animals and Familiars

Last updated on: May 31, 2016 at 12:03 pm   By Guest Contributor

One of my best friends is only three years old. I’ve watched her grow from a small thing that couldn’t even climb up into bed. Rosie, is a Pyrenees and Jack Russel Terrier mix which means she’s a medium sized dog who thinks she’s a puppy. Her favorite place is on the coach with her head on someone’s lap and her feet on the other person. My husband and I both have epilepsy. We’ve discovered that when one of us... Read more

Blogging Against Disablism

Last updated on: May 31, 2016 at 12:03 pm   By Guest Contributor

Diary of a Goldfish blog hosted a Blogging Against Disablism Day. I’ve been reading through the blogs that participated and found that I can relate to many of the writer’s experiences. College and Disability blog “Why are so many people with disabilities unemployed?” The author notes that according to the US Department of Labor 15.2% of people with disabilities are unemployed and 8.1% of people without disabilities are unemployed. They write about how there are three main things making it... Read more

You’ll Survive if your Stem and Roots are Strong

Last updated on: May 31, 2016 at 12:03 pm   By Guest Contributor

This month I’ve been like the pumpkin vine I’ve nurtured from a seed. When a seed is grown indoors, it sprouts up into a life of luxury with ample water, light, and controlled temperature. Once it’s outside it has to survive bugs and spring time extremes of frost and heat. To help the plant “harden” meaning toughen up it’s stem and roots, you set it outside for a few hours a day. Apparently I didn’t quite do that enough for... Read more

Touched by an Act of Kindness

Last updated on: May 31, 2016 at 12:03 pm   By Guest Contributor

On Wednesday I wrote “You Are Not A Rock” which was about the importance of community and our attitudes toward life. Just a day later, I experienced just how important those things are. And this brings me to the heart of what I’ve learned from Beyond Survival: community and attitude is everything …. [L]ife is going to swing back and forth from times of plenty and times of less. From times of pain when our disabilities really get us down... Read more

You Are Not A Rock

Last updated on: May 31, 2016 at 12:03 pm   By Guest Contributor

I’ve been watching Les Stroud: Beyond Survival. In each episode Les lives for a week or so with a different indigenous culture studying their survival skills and at least one of their religious ceremonies. He doesn’t pass judgement on their rituals and always respects the boundaries they set up. Most of the time he doesn’t experience what the people say is supposed to happen at the ritual. He doesn’t then claim is was illegitimate, he explains he’s glad to have... Read more

International Women’s Day: Women Making a Difference

Last updated on: May 31, 2016 at 12:03 pm   By Guest Contributor

Today is International Women’s Day and I wanted to take a special look at women who have made a difference for people with disabilities. International Women’s Day (IWD) began as International Working Women’s Day, Socialist political event primarily for Eastern Europe, Russia, and the former Soviet bloc. Overtime the marches and activism waned. In some countries, it became a day to show love for women in general. In 1975, during International Women’s Year, the United Nations began celebrating 8 March... Read more
