The Handicapped Convert

Last updated on: September 7, 2008 at 6:21 am   By Fr. Joseph Huneycutt

Larry Nevell was driving pretty well for a blind man. “Frrrrrrrrp” meant he was too close to danger on his right. “Fudup, fudup, fudup” meant he was straddling the center line. Silence indicated smooth sailing. He’d had trouble finding the car without drawing attention. The “bwwap, bwwap, bwwap” from the third button in the middle of the key’s remote seemed loud and incessant. The car was over to his left, down about 20 fenders. As planned, he’d left his cane... Read more

MARRIAGE: Life is Not a Party

Last updated on: September 4, 2008 at 1:11 pm   By Fr. Joseph Huneycutt

Life is not a party, as some people think, and after they get married take a fall from heaven to earth. Marriage is a vast ocean, and you don’t know where it will wash you up … It is an adulteration of marriage for us to think that it is a road to happiness, as if it were a denial of the cross. The joy of marriage is for husband and wife to put their shoulders to the wheel and... Read more

2 for Tuesday

Last updated on: September 1, 2008 at 6:42 am   By Fr. Joseph Huneycutt

Michael Sakran, former Youth Director at St George, Houston, and all-round good guy, keeps an online journal documenting life at St Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary. Take a look. I have no idea who this chap is, but his photos are definitely worth a look! Besides, he’s a Huneycutt. You just never know what might pop up when using a search engine. I searched for “John Huneycutt” and up popped that image of John Belushi — Source. Read more

The Xenia, Galina, Coinkydink

Last updated on: August 30, 2008 at 10:05 pm   By Fr. Joseph Huneycutt

Years ago, on a Sunday evening, I received a phone all from a man we’ll call “Tim.” At the time, there was a parishioner in our little Mission – we’ll call her “Sherry.” The caller said, “Pastor Huneycutt? This is Tim.” Thinking I knew the man to be the Protestant man named “Tim” who was married to the newly Orthodox parishioner, “Sherry” – I said: “Hello, Tim. How are you?” He said, “Well, not too good Pastor … she’s gone.”... Read more

PRAYERS: Hurricane

Last updated on: August 30, 2008 at 7:41 am   By Fr. Joseph Huneycutt

O Lord Jesus Christ As you saved your apostles from perishing in a storm by calming wind and waves on you command, so now keep us safe and sound in this hurricane season. Grant us favorable and benign weather. Protect us from the unpredictable elements of nature. Steer us from storm, flood, fire, illness, injury, disaster and sudden death. Preserve us from all evil and harm for we, though sinful, are nonetheless the work of Your hands. And You together... Read more

When Black Becomes … White

Last updated on: August 28, 2008 at 5:33 am   By Fr. Joseph Huneycutt

Over the years I’ve found that listening to Classical Music in my car is the best way to not only control road rage, but to actually enjoy driving. Therefore, I listen to NPR stations a lot. If you’re accustomed to the same, you know that sometimes you might tune in and they are playing the most fabulous hits of the Classical Music World – Like the greatest hits of Mozart, Bach, and, oh, Garrison Keillor. You know … for some... Read more

Beauty Pageant for Nuns

Last updated on: August 26, 2008 at 3:22 pm   By Fr. Joseph Huneycutt

An Italian priest says he is organising the world’s first beauty pageant for nuns to erase a stereotype of them as being old and dour. “Nuns are – above all – women, and beauty is a gift from God,” he told Italy’s Corriere della Sera newspaper. He is asking nuns to send their photos to him, saying that internet users will then choose the winner. Father Rungi stressed that nuns were not being invited to parade in bathing suits, saying... Read more
