50 years after the Yom Kippur war, my soul remembers.<\/strong><\/h2>\n Yom Kippur is known as a day of atonement and self- forgiveness<\/a>.<\/p>\n A time for reconciliation and spiritual growth.<\/p>\n However, for me, it is not just about forgiveness.<\/p>\n It is a reminder of my first true meeting with loss and grief.<\/p>\n The pains of war.<\/p>\n 50 years after the\u00a0 war, my soul remembers.<\/p>\n I had just turned 15, it was a warm but comfortable Oct. day.<\/p>\n The quiet and peacefulness of Yom Kippur<\/a> and Shabbat<\/a> (Jewish Sabbath, Saturday)<\/p>\n appeared on the same day.<\/p>\n I was sitting in the yard of my parent\u2019s Kibbutz<\/a> home in Israel.<\/p>\n My father, and I were playing \u00a0Shesh Besh<\/a>, our usual Shabbat game.<\/p>\n Even on our secular Kibbutz, on this solemn day, no radios or TV stations played.<\/p>\n There was a tranquil quietude.<\/p>\n Suddenly, word got out, we needed to open the radio, conflict had erupted.<\/p>\n War had stolen the calm of Yom Kippur.<\/p>\n That was fifty years ago, a childlike innocence had left me.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Photo- Figist Co<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nThe scenes that followed that moment would forever shape my relationship with Yom Kippur.<\/h2>\n**** ** The scenes that followed that moment have forever shaped my relationship with Yom Kippur.<\/p>\n ** ****My new brother in-law, along with all the age-appropriate men were called up to serve.<\/p>\n**** Teenagers, women as well as the men that stayed behind took over all the Kibbutz chores<\/a>.<\/p>\n My job was one that would shape my calling<\/a> to work with those touched by grief and loss.<\/p>\n I was asked to accompany and show Army officers to the homes of fallen soldiers.<\/p>\n 8 times I walked these officers to the front door of homes they wished they didn\u2019t have to visit.<\/p>\n 2 of these homes were my parent\u2019s next-door neighbors.<\/p>\n There was no time for self -reflection, forgiveness or reconciliation, just moments to endure.<\/p>\n Only years later did I understand how unknowingly those days would guide my path.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Photo-Susan P.Lax<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nI decided, the age of 45 was a good time to reconcile with Yom Kippur.<\/strong><\/h2>\n****** ** At the age of 45, I decided it was time to reconcile with Yom Kippur.<\/p>\n ** Basically, I wanted to familiarize myself with the spiritual gifts it offered.<\/p>\n ** Trusting that time had healed wounds.<\/p>\n ** ******A Jewish Spirituality student, I was thrilled to learn the different spiritual avenues of Yom Kippur.<\/p>\n I looked forward to my yearly \u00a0Yom Kippur fast<\/a> and soul cleansing.<\/p>\n A new relationship with Yom Kippur had been formed.<\/p>\n At least for a while.<\/p>\n I didn\u2019t want to lose the spiritual Yom Kippur experiences<\/a> I had so mindfully acquired.<\/strong><\/h2>\n******** ** Last week, I was listening to an Israeli news station, when I heard the next segment being announced.<\/p>\n ** \u201c50 years to the Yom Kippur war.\u201d<\/p>\n ** I could feel the wounds of the past flow through me.<\/p>\n ** Demons of my Yom Kippur relationship had once again come to visit.<\/p>\n ** The pathways to homes of the bereaved families were awakened.<\/p>\n ** ********Past sorrow and grief came knocking at my heart\u2019s door.<\/p>\n I didn\u2019t want to lose the spiritual Yom Kippur experiences<\/a> I had so mindfully acquired.<\/p>\n So, I decided to write about it, here to you.<\/p>\n Acknowledging what was as I welcomed new healing.<\/p>\n Healing never ends, but with time I believe we welcome it with more ease.<\/p>\n May their memory be for a blessing.<\/a><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n I invite you to learn\u00a0 about my newsletter Morning Inspiration <\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n and my book A Heart\u2019s Landscape,An Invitation to the Garden of Moments<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" 50 years after the Yom Kippur war, my soul remembers.
