If Everything Changes, What Good is Tradition?

Last updated on: January 4, 2020 at 7:30 pm   By Thorn Mooney

We build traditions because we can't help it, I think, whether we identify as "traditional" or not. They can serve us or not, but that's the question I think we need to be constantly asking: what does this serve? Read more

Saying Hello to a New Year

Last updated on: January 2, 2020 at 11:24 pm   By Thorn Mooney

When I start a new book of shadows, I also introduce myself and write a bit about who and where I am. A lot has changed since I first began blogging at Patheos in 2015, so in 2020 it seemed like a new introduction was in order. Read more

The Witches’ Voice: A Love Letter

Last updated on: November 20, 2019 at 2:01 pm   By Thorn Mooney

WitchVox helped me start countless book clubs, three college Pagan groups, launch two websites, and form my own coven, once I was ready. It made me feel less alone, and came with the added benefit of my parents, bosses, and school bullies not knowing  it existed, which meant that it felt private and safe in a way that Facebook never will. It was an archive—a testament to the weird, wonderfulness of the community I was just getting to know, and would come to devote my life to. Read more

How to Be a Better Beginner

Last updated on: September 14, 2019 at 12:48 pm   By Thorn Mooney

There are tons of articles floating around about how to choose good beginner books, how to find reputable teachers, how to join friendly covens, and how to find fun and educational public events, but in all this conversation we’re missing something that’s just as important as the ability to choose good resources: how to be a good beginner! Read more

Moving, Materialism, and Finding My Feet Again

Last updated on: September 7, 2019 at 10:43 am   By Thorn Mooney

The collection of tarot cards is not my ability to divine. The books are not the knowledge I’ve accumulated. The journals are not the experiences I’ve had. The sword is not my power as a covenleader. The trinkets and greeting cards are not my friends and family. The altar is not my power as a witch. Read more

Working with Personal Cycles

Last updated on: June 6, 2019 at 6:38 am   By Thorn Mooney

I believe in True Will. I think I know what mine is. But is it possible to get there without overriding my own cycles? Or are our personal cycles in place to help us enact that purpose? Read more

Conversion and Trauma

Last updated on: May 27, 2019 at 1:31 pm   By Thorn Mooney

Religion can be profound and creative and enlightening and whatever else, but it also traumatizes. Some in our community bear deep wounds that will never fully heal. Read more

Review: Wicca by Harmony Nice

Last updated on: May 25, 2019 at 8:54 pm   By Thorn Mooney

Harmony Nice is one of the leading voices in this latest incarnation of Wicca, and it wouldn’t surprise me if this book does what Teen Witch did in the nineties, both good and bad. Read more

Beginner Books that Don’t Suck

Last updated on: January 21, 2019 at 11:12 am   By Thorn Mooney

It’s been a long time since I’ve been a beginner, but being active on the Pagan and witch Internet means that I’m constantly in contact with newcomers. I see their questions (and sometimes have them directed at me), I check out the books they’re reading, and I watch what’s changing since I first got started in the nineties (a lot, for sure). Recently, I was telling Mat Auryn that I wish those of us who have been around for a... Read more

The Celtic Cross is Kind of Terrible

Last updated on: July 19, 2018 at 9:49 pm   By Thorn Mooney

In the beginning, I did what most people who buy tarot decks do: I assumed the problem I had interpreting cards was with me and I put my cards away, because, clearly, I just wasn’t cut out to work with tarot. The problem wasn’t me. The problem was that the Celtic Cross is a poor place to start for anyone, and doesn’t even make much sense further down the road. Read more
